|
|
Many people are producers, engineers, etc.
I make beats (hiphop) and record/edit/mix/master sessions on a Desktop XP, w/tuarag drum sequencer, Cooledit for multitracks, and T-racks for software mastering (soundblaster audigy card). The final result is a store quality cd. I've sold nearly 2,000 units w/no distro (yes we have a upc), only available online, from my trunk, shows, or newbury comics...
well, I want to be able to use my gentoo laptop for on the road beat making and music production (live recording, multi tracking).
1) Does anyone have a setup like this?
2) What are the linux (gentoo) equiv of the following win programs:
a: sequencer for wav files, to make drum loops
b: a multi track program, w/real time analzyers, compression, not to mention GREAT ( i need precise) editing abilities.
c: mastering software
To see what we are currently producing, check out www.mdhrecords.com.
I need the quality to be close, if not better than this. Digital is digital, so no problems there.
If i can get enough feedback, and I will try to install all these programs on my laptop and get it running, I will write a great FAQ on this subject.
Thanks-in-advance! The gentoo community is the best. :D _________________ "In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a *revolutionary act" - George Orwell.

You can start out by serching this site: http://linux-sound.org
It contains a listing of Linux audio/MIDI software. All kinds of goodies. When building your audio setup, don't expect things to just "come together," you will spend a good amount of time configuring. Try to use applications that support ALSA, JACK, and LADSPA Plugins. ALSA is obvious, JACK allows you to connect apps together, for example feed the output of a softsynth into the mixer of another app like Ardour. LADSPA plugins are simply plugins, sadly, hopefully I'm wrong, they are not real-time plugins. But, JACK IS real-time, so a JACK app can function similar to a realtime plugin.
Sweep and Audacity are decent wave editors, I'm sorry, but I can't find the sequencer I used long ago for loops. It was pretty good. I havent used JAZZ in a long time, but I might be worth looking into (MIDI sequencer). For modular synthesis, you gotte try SpiralSynthModular http://www.pawfal.org/Software/SSM/. The spiralLoop plugin is neat, usefull for loops. I don't remember if it's got a sequencer plugin though. It does have envelopes, amps, synth stuff. I hope I this helps! |

Great, this looks promising. I know what I'll be doing this weekend..(and the rest of the month. = ])
Thanks - I'm planning on putting some time into this.
Are any of these packages available under /src/portage? _________________ "In times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a *revolutionary act" - George Orwell.

Thanks all!
I will check both those links. Muse looks promising, maybe a too much in one though, but if it all works, I wont complain.
Thanks again!
I'll let you know how its going, once it gets going. Still need to research more.
