This is what I got when I installed it:
Code:
while installing the base system:
cd /usr/portage
script/bootstrap.sh
[blocks B ] sys-kernel/linux-headers ("virtual/os-headers" from pkg sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.7-r3)

base system tryed: gentoo livecd 2004.0 , 2004.0 smp, 2004.1, knoppix 2004-05-17, knoppix 2004-05-17 kernel26
script tryed: script/bootstrap.sh, script/bootstrap-2.6.sh (kernel header keyword has been modified)
accept keyword="~x86"

all things follow the gentoo hand book except modified make.conf about "~x86", buy I install success many times ago with the same settings.
visiting gentoo web page found this:
In this week's Gentoo Weekly Newsletter we'll tell you about version 2.0.51 of Portage, which is currently in testing. You'll also find security and community coverage as well as a tip on using 'make' for backups. Enjoy!
is this the problem??

also failed while:
emerge glibc -pv
[blocks B ] sys-kernel/linux-headers ("virtual/os-headers" from pkg sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.7-r3)
[ebuild N ] sys-devel/patch-2.5.9 -build -static 197 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-kernel/linux26-headers-2.6.7-r3 34,269 kB
[ebuild N ] sys-devel/gettext-0.12.1-r1 -bootstrap -emacs +nls 5,592 kB
[ebuild U ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20040619 [2.3.2-r9] -debug 15,534 kB

check that /usr/src/linux point to /usr/src/linux-2.6.7-r3 (well, to the good kernel path)...
