Hi I am using a Mac PPC and running off the live CD 2004.1. It is working OK and I got it to recognize my FW drive and everything, but now I am stuck. Here's what happened:

I started the install of the kernel with 'emerge ppc-development-sources,' only to get a build error on one of the USE tags (I think OSS or something, it probably doesn't matter...). I took off that flag and went back to emerge again, but this time I accidentally just did 'merge ppc-sources.' This build did not work either. Is it bad that I switched? Will I have to start all over?

When I tried to build this second kernel, I got a known error (perl failed), and the fix was to update gcc to 3.33. I ran 'merge gcc' and it went smoothly (except for the part that it takes four hours 8O ). I got the same problem AGAIN! And now I can't even run 'emerge ppc-development-sources' without it failing within the first 5 seconds. Does anyone have any advice? What is going on!?!

I realize now that I didn't run 'emerge gcc-config' :D

That might be the problem... I'm emerging the kernel now. Update in a bit.

UPDATE:

:? No good. Still stuck, but I did manage to figure out how to look at all the emerge commands and options, and they are very very helpful!

Can you post the actual error? That might help us figure out what's going wrong...

:D I will... if it doesn't work. I think I found the problem, thanks to IRC. I didn't mount /proc, and I think that might be what the problem was, but who knows... (it doesn't say to do that in the install instructions, or maybe I overlooked it :? ) Anyway, I'm emerging the kernel as we speak, and I will post the error if it emerges again! (hah! great pun! sorry!)

Ugh this is bugging me so much. Same problem for anything I do.

Here is the message I get tying to compile (this time trying gentoo-dev-source):

Quote:

make[1]: Entering directory '/var/tmp/portage/perl-5.8.4-r1/work/perl-5.8.4'
echo Makefile.SH cflags.SH config_h.SH makeaperl.SH makedepend.SH myconfig.SH writemain.SH pod/Makefile.SH | tr ' ' '
\n' >.shlist
Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/perl-5.8.4-r1/work/perl-5.8.4'
Updating makefile...
test -s perlmain.c && touch perlmain.c
cd x2p; make depend
make[1]: entering directory '/var/portage/libperl-5.8.4-r1/work/perl-5.8.4/x2p'
makefile:157: *** target pattern contains no '%'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/perl-5.8.4-r1/work/perl-5.8.4/x2p'

!!! ERROR: sys-devel/libperl-5.2.8.r1 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 210, Exitcode 2
!!! Couldn't make libperl.so depends

This thing is baffling the crap out of me.

yea, but can I do it from the live CD in commandline, so that I don't have to type it all out? I don't know how exactly to do this...

This is the most curious thing ever... I did an emerge sync and it said to update portage. So I did emerge portage, and guess what happened?

THE SAME THING AS WITH THE KERNEL!

This just makes me sad.

I'd recommend starting over from the beginning. Make sure you follow all the directions exactly. I'm guessing you missed something BIG somewhere.

I think that if everything goes OK I might have it by tomorrow!
