Hello,

I have an old dell xps t500 that I'd like to use for gentoo.
I tried to load the 2004.1 mimimal LiveCD and it died on a
kernel panic while trying to boot.

The log output muttered something about not being able
support an xps t500. Is this true? Any suggestions? I can't
really afford to go buy new hardware just to use Gentoo, but
I really wanted to play around with it.

Any suggestions?

Craig

Well, to give you a good answer I need more info...

What messages exactly... I need them verbatim... What did the log say exactly...

What are the hardware specs of the machine?

You might want to try to boot with http://www.knoppix.org/.

Ok, the boot prompt comes up, I type in gentoo.

The splash screen loads and then what looks to be a console log
says lots of stuff, then this:

.
.
.
i8k: unsupported model XPST500
i8k: vendor: Dell Computer Corporation, model=XPST500, version=4S4E
u [with an umlat above it] kernel bug at ll_rw_blk.c:1106!
invalid operand: 0000
CPU: 0
EIP: 0010: [<c032575e7>] not tainted
.
.
.
code: 0f.......
<0> kernel panic: Attempted to kill init

That's it. Then it just sits there.

Misc. errata, I'm running the A04 version of the bios.

Thanks,
Craig

Try the smp-nofb kernel... See what that does...

2004.2 solved the problem.

Thanks for rushing that out the door today for me. :)
