i'm using hdparm -d1 -A1 -m16 -u1 -a6 -c1 -X 69 /dev/hd[a-d]
which does what it should:

hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

Yet whenever i try to watch something(with mplayer which uses about 7% cpu when running), and at the same time doing something as simple as an unrar, my io-wait jumps to 80+%. Or rather, it doesn't matter if i use mplayer or not, whenever i try to rar something(or when my system compresses log files at night) the io-wait jumps to incredible hights.
As far as i can see its not a udma problem. i wonder if i haven't compiled the right chipset for my ide controller, but then i suspect i couldn't activate UDMA.
from my /proc/pci

which i have enabled in my kernel(not as a module, directly in kernel).
Though i just noticed i haven't compiled "Generic PCI IDE Chipset Support", not sure if that could create my problem, i have enabled "Generic PCI Bus-master DMA support" though(ofcourse, the SIS module is as an extention to this one)
I am fairely certain that i haven't had this problem before, without it being the proccess or PIO that used all my resources, but this time its not the proccess, nor am i running in PIO.
Example unrar

the source of the rar file is a networked drive but the output and the mplayer is from the same drive.
when i idle i get this

Now i know i have alot of redundant and irelevant information in this post/cry for help. But i would rather give too much.
So my basic question(now that i have forced people to read through all this).
Should any simple process like rar/bz2 create 50+%(sometimes nearing 80) of io-wait(not afaik).
If not, any idea as to the cause.
Sincerely
Tobias Ussing

I experience the exact same problem. I've experienced the problem from 2.5.something through 2.6.8-rc1 (my current kernel)
Could you please paste lspci, and tell me what filesystem you are using on / ?
myself I'm on ReiserFS
