Well, I finally did it, after so many tries, and giving up, but coming back, it is done. I have installed Gentoo, and have Fluxbox running on it.

I only did stage 3 install, but, I am just so happy :)

So, why did I create this thread? I still have some questions:

When I installed gentoo, I didn't mess with any of those USE variables, and configuration settings to make things faster in gentoo, I just went through it, so I could get X up and working, and now it is done. But..... Is it possible for me to change all those settings to get everything to work faster?

Also... I used Genkernel, that thing that generates a kernel for you. How would I go about making a new kernel... would I have to reinstall anything, or is there an easier way?

Is it possible to enable 3d support for an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro?

And lastly, I want to install programs like gAIM and some other programs I want to install. How would I download those .rpm files and install them that way? Do I have to download something so I can use .rpm files? Or should I just emerge them all the time?

Thanks for all the help!!! If it wasn't for some of you, I would have never finished this!

1) you can change your USE variables and CFLAGS as much as you want now. Of course you'll only see the benifit when you re-compile.

2) Compiling your own kernel is fairly easy....you don't need anything else installed. This forum has some excellent howto's.

3) i don't use ATI, but do a search....many people have 3d working

4) Don't use RPMs. The emerge command will do everything you need.

No offense but those are some pretty basic questions. Maybe you should spend a few hours going over the FAQs and other Gentoo docs.....get some basic training in man

Anyway......enjoy :)

Thanks for the help... sorry about the questions.

I'm getting cought up in the excitement.

I'm currently emerged gnome, and hope to get that installed.

I downloaded a guide i found in the docs for installing window managers. It would have helped if I knew about it a long time ago.

I printed it out.

Thanks :)

Alright, I did it

Gnome is still being emerged ... 14 out of 92 (this will take awhile)

At least I have Fluxbox running, so I can surf the web

I want to install Wine so I can run Photoshop CS (I use it every single day) and Championship Manager 03/04 (2D Soccer Management Sim)

If I can get those 2 windows apps to run on Linux. I'll have no more need to boot into XP anymore :)

I hope it is possible

Oh yeah, everything is working great so far, but... NO SOUND!!!

When I do the emerge nforce-audio
it gives me an error, but this is because I already think it is in my kernel settings.

I heard something about ALSA

And I tried searching, but I still don't know.

What do I have to emerge to get sound to work on Nforce (A7n8X Deluxe) mobo?

Thanks for the help

Word of advice. Start a new thread for a different problem. Give it a descriptive name and post in the relevant forum section. This will maximize the chances of it getting fixed. :)
