Is there a way to bootstrap without texinfo? I have an athlon-xp, and it always fails the bootstrap if my CFLAGS show march=athlon-xp, so I emerged sys-apps/texinfo myself, after commenting out my CFLAGS, per this thread. Now my question is how do I get the bootstrap script to not emerge that package once I put my CFLAGS back? I thought portage would just see that it's up-to-date and ignore it, but that is not what happens. When I add the CFLAGS again and bootstrap, it fails at texinfo again.

Previously I tried doing a complete bootstrap without optimized CFLAGS (sort of defeats the purpose of stage 1), but then it failed at groff instead.

Any ideas?

Have you seen this thread?

It looks like some people got by a similar problem with cflags intact.
