Well I got the dreaded Harddrive click on friday on the Harddrive where I have Windows and Gentoo OS. Luckily I had backed up all my userdata to my 2nd harddrive a few days before (unfortunetly never backed up /etc or /boot/grub/grub.conf so gona have 2 do from scratch).

So got my new HD installed and Windows installed fully so gonna start teh Gentoo side of things.

MY last setup was a Stage1 and gonna do another stage1. Question is abt Xorg. I have held off changing to Xorg for a bit but now i am doin a fresh installation i though I might as well start from teh ground up.

Once I can boot into my grub if I do a

#emerge gnome

it will emerge Xorg

if I do a

#emerge xorg-?????

then a

#emerge gnome

will that be ok?

any otehr advice appreciated

my recommendation. just do an stage2 install, i learned from some love-sources guys, stage1 does not use /etc/make.conf so none of your optimizations. just do an emerge -e world when you have a working system.

for xorg, just unmask it in /etc/portage/package.keywords and emerge it, change your virtuals to xorg-x11 and go on.

/var/cache/edb/virtuals here change xfree to xorg-x11, so you dont get any problems when doing emerge -u world... or just inject xfree ;)

I think you'll get away with just emerging xorg-x11 before gnome. That's what I did on my last install, and I can't remember having any problems.
