|
|
Hi,
I recently moved from Belgium to New Zealand. In Belgium
I had broadband access via a speed touch home ADSL
modem (the ethernet one not the USB version), with PPPoE.
Here in New Zealand they use PPPoA which require that I
reconfigure my modem at some point.
Now my problem is I seem not to be abble to connect to the
modem. It should be accessible at http://10.0.0.138 but
I don't have any networking from my ethernet card (which
is properly configured and up) and the modem. What to do I do
to establish a network connection between my computer and
the modem? The script I was using originally to go on the internet
is useless as the network has completly changed.
Thanks for any advice,
Francois |

Sorry for the delay. The problem concern my home computer and
I am writing this from work, and there is the difference in time zone as
well.
Anyway on that computer I have two linux install. The old one that
I was using in Belgium (SuSE) and a new networkless install with
gentoo 2004.1 .
On the SuSE install when I do ifconfig eth0 I get:
Code: | inet addr: 192.168.22.1 Bcast:192.168.22.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
|
Which I hope is what you wanted. It is probably the ip address I got
the last time I connected to the internet in Belgium.
On the brand new gentoo install ifconfig doesn't report an ip address,
none has ever been set.
Will I have to, just to connect to my modem no mention of the
internet at large here, to set a home network of just one computer
or something like that? |

you should be on same ip range as the modem
ie.: 10.0.0.x
try setting up ip add manually on that range then you will be able to access the modem |

in order to access your modem's web interface or telnet to it you need to change your computer's ip address to a 10.0.0.x IP |

You need to either ask your ISP for a configuration CD or get one from another person.
The Speedtouch modems have some config parts that are specific for each ISP and you can't access them in any way other than through the config file.
I've had quite a lot of problems with my 510 (same as yours) because i got this one as a replacement for another older Speedtouch and it didn't brought any config files. |

Thank you fennec, it worked. I can now access my modem.
Thank you also for your advice malloc. I certainly realised
that I would have to enter new config for the ISP, getting
to the modem is an essential part of the exercise.
Cheers,
