can't establish dial-up connection

I'm running a Lucent Modem, have ltmodem compiled

I start KPPP, i've checked and double checked my username, password, and number. It gets to verifying and continuously closes.

I've switched from Hardware to Software flow control and back again. nothing works.

I don't remember setting up ppp for a modem at install, only dhcp for eth0. how can i check if it's set up, and if it isn't, how should i set it up?
