At every emerging, try to look at USE available adding -v option to emerge.
If you like to see Korean characters in an application, turn on 'cjk' USE, for example,

# USE="cjk" emerge xmms

ok, but what does the -v option do?

and thanks for the cjk tip

but then, i'm absolutely lost on how to add font directories...maybe i missed that in the handbook, i'll go back and look on that...or you could tell me how here...and that'll be even better.

URL to http://wiki.kldp.org/wiki.php/GentooInstall would be helpful if you can see Korean characters.

hanterm: http://wiki.kldp.org/wiki.php/GentooInstall#s-1.4.23.4
mlterm: http://wiki.kldp.org/wiki.php/GentooInstall#s-1.4.23.4.1
nabi: http://wiki.kldp.org/wiki.php/GentooInstall#s-1.4.23.6
fonts: http://wiki.kldp.org/wiki.php/GentooInstall#s-1.4.23.7
mplayer: http://wiki.kldp.org/wiki.php/GentooInstall#s-1.4.23.11

You might need to directly go to `nabi` and `fonts` sections above.
`hanterm`, `mlterm`, and `mplayer` sections would be useful if you need more Korean support.

cf. ami is not for gtk+ but for gtk. imhangul or nabi is recommended.
However if you insist to use ami, replace `nabi` with `ami` on the `nabi` section.

XMODIFILERS="@im=nabi" => XMODIFILERS="@im=ami"
XIM_PROGRAM="/usr/bin/nabi" => XIM_PROGRAM="/usr/bin/ami"
