and the same problem here ;)
I did md5sum, too.
I tried to burn the CD with k3b and directly with cdrecord in DAO AND in RAW Mode. But i'm still not able to boot from cd ;)

Does the 2004.2 universal livecd work? I have to start with the gentoo install today.

I burned 2004.2 minimal as an iso image with Nero and it worked.

Currently chugging away compiling all the 'system' packages.

2004.1 on the otherhand would crap out on my 1999 model dell trying to boot.

md5sum'ed in windows and burned with Nero, still doesn't want to boot.

skatefriday, what exact options did you choose in Nero (TAO/DAO/DAO-96/finalize-cd/non-finalize)?

2004.1 minimal cd worked fine.

All my three test machines don't boot with install-x86-minimal-2004.2.iso. As for install-x86-universal-2004.2.iso, my p4 machine works good, one p3 machine boots but has some problems and the other p3 machine doesn't boot.

sorry to ask but sometimes one forgets simple things: is your home pc configured in the bios for cd boot? if so do you know that your cd-rom drive boots cds?

guys: it worked fine with me I used Nero with the default options and did not finalize the CD.

(currently compiling 2.6.7 kernel) :D

i didn't use the minimal cd (pls don't blame me for that ;)) instead i used the universal which is working for me, i burned it with nero and finalized it

is there a real difference between finalized and not which could lead to "not working" on modern/usual/old systems? afaik there could only be a problem with old cd-rom drives?! i would be pleased if anybody (or somebody? i always mix that up) could answer me that question

modern/usual/old is everything 100+mhz with a cd-rom drive 4x or faster in this post (i know that this sytems aren't modern or up-to-date but they are still common for people, at least for the people around me, who set up a linux system as a router) .. i don't know if a 4x can already boot from cd then replace it with a cd-rom drive which can boot from cd indipendent from speed

another question which should not be here but maybe anyone can answer it to me who is reading this. i booted from cd, everything went fine, my 2 NIC's were recognised also my soundcard. i set up everything correct imo and made adsl-start (the system is directly connected to the internet over adsl and is my router (no it's not a 100mhz box, it is an XP 1800+)). then i tried to arrange everything for "basic routing" so i can get online with my other pc's too and tried to configure iptables for that (iptables -t nat -A ...) and there is the problem, i always get back that it can't find iptables :(

how can i set up basic routing so that i can still browse this forum and use irc?

I am having the same problem:
The CD (2004.2 minimal) booted on a work computer, but not at home. I "borrowed" the CD-ROM drive from work and installed it in the home machine and it still wouldn't boot. I tried upgrading the firmware of the (home) DVD drive but that didn't work either.

Edit: I checked the md5 sums before burning.

An older gentoo CD (1.4) works on both machines, so I can only conclude that it is the 2004.2 image which is the problem.

i couldnt get my home pc to boot from the minimal 2004.2 but my work computers did. so i burned the universal and it worked for me at home. i thought they were the same exact cd just that the universal had packages on it but i guess not.

Yes. My bios is set to boot from CD. Other bootable CD's just work (Debian Woody, XP).

I tried the 2004.1 minimal CD and this one also just worked. It seems there is a problem with 2004.2.

Managed to boot minimal LiveCD with Smart BootManager (see The Gentoo Linux alternative installation method HOWTO)

But next I get following output:
Code:

>> Mounting filesystems...
Started device management daemon v1.3.25 for /newroot/dev
>> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/cdroms/cdrom0
>> CD medium found on /newroot/dev/cdroms/cdrom0
>> Determining root device...
>> Filling tmpfs...
Invalid loop location: /livecd.squashfs
Please export LOOP with a valid location, or reboot and pass a proper loop=...
kernel command line!

So, anyone has any idea how to supply a proper 'loop' kernel argument or LOOP variable?

Sorry, but it looks like a hardware thing :-\. I've run into this a couple times with older hardware which forced me to do the gentoo installation from different types of livecds. All I can suggest is to get an external cd-rom drive for your issue, sorry :(.

I have a Shuttle SB75G2, and a Pioneer DVR-107BK drive. It didn't boot off the minimal disc at all. It booted from the Universal install disk to get to the command prompt.

I have the same problem,

Downloaded both the min and universal versions 2004.2 and the min does not boot.

The universal one does, and so does my 2004.1 min.

The MD5 was correct, so I tried downloading it again, and again it would not boot.

It is not hardware related, because the universal, 2004.2 works, and both of the 2004.1 works.

EDIT CD Devices:
DVD-ROM: Lite-On 16x IDE HD-165H
DVD-R/RW: Pioneer DVR-105
