hi,
i installed gentoo 2004.2 on a no name amd athlon system with stage2. i followed the instruction from the gentoo handbook.
i can not login with a normal user. just root can login.
i did check the forum and see some entries about
Code: | /etc/login.access
/etc/login.defs
/etc/security/*
|
i did check all this files without any improvement for my problem.
on the console for the messages (alt f12) i can not see any errors. in the /var/log/messages i can not see any errors either.
i did try the actuall kernel 2.4.26 and 2.6.7.
i did recompile shadow and util-linux.
no improvement.
ssh login for normal users is ok.
any tips and ideas what could be wrong?

i had not pam in my USE variable and a error in the CFLAGS (arghhhhhhh).
i decide to make a new installation of my machine.
it works now.

It does sound like a security problem if you're still able to SSH into the user accounts. Most likely local login is disabled for the user accounts. I'd double-check those security configs again to make sure something didn't get changed by accident.
If you're a little confused about the syntax of the security files, you can post them up here for folks to have a look at. |
