Posted: Tue Jul 27, 2004 4:04 pm Post subject: Which mailer daemon / mail server? |
|
|
I own my own domain and would like to run my own mail server with pop3 boxes on it.
I can edit my DNS records to point the MX for my domain to my IP, but then I'm a bit stuck. What software would I need to run.. I've played with mailer daemons in the past but there are so many different ones I don't know which to use.
I need a daemon that is simple to configure, - accept incoming mail for my domain, and then can place it in a POP3 box on the gentoo server. People on my local area network can then download their mail from this gentoo machine.
What advice can you give me please?
Thanks. _________________ --[ UltraSPARC ]--

I use PostFix, it works for me, fairly easy config, good online docs at http://www.postfix.org . I'd avoid Sendmail (unless you are expecting huge mail traffic), and Qmail looks OK, although I've never tried it. |

So that is purelya mailer daemon, - not a POP3 server, is that correct? _________________ --[ UltraSPARC ]--

Yes, it's just an MTA, you then need to add a POP3 and or IMAP server if you are going to serve mail to external users. |

What a nightmare!
Could anyone be really really nice and help me setup postfix to accept incoming mail for my domain?
I have absolutely no idea how to do this _________________ --[ UltraSPARC ]--

The gentoo mail guide was far too complex for what I needed. I dont need SQL based users, virt mailboxes etc.. I just wanted an MTA and local pop3 boxes, so I am using postfix and courier-pop3d and its working fine. _________________ --[ UltraSPARC ]--
