This is my problem... I have been trying to install Gentoo onto my box. I can completely install Gentoo with Software RAID0, LVM2 to create the partitions, SATA hard drives work great durring the whole process. BUT, when I go to reboot the machine, NO GO. Thus far, I reboot and I get the error:
Code: |
PCI: PCI BIOS revision 2.10 entry at 0xf0031, last bus=3
PCI: Using configuration type 1
mtrr: v2.0 (20020519)
ACPI: Subsystem revision 20040326
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference
|
I have installed and staticly built in all RAID, LVM, and SATA modules into the Kernel.
For your information/reference:
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 Processor with HT Technology 3.2GHz
Motherboard: Intel D875DPZ Motherboard
Memory: 1GB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz - 2 x 512MB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 SE 128MB DDR w/Digital & S-Video Out
System Drive: 320GB (2 x 160GB) Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Serial ATA 7200RPM RAID 0 Array
Optical Drive One: Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM Drive with Software DVD Decoder
Optical Drive Two: Lite-On 52x32x52x CD-RW
Floppy Drive: 3.5" 1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive

no, it seems to have a problem with ACPI on your processor... Probably a buggy BIOS...
Try booting with "noacpi" kernel option _________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit. |

I'd like you to either remove ACPI from your kernel or try booting without it. (Try adding acpi=off to the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf or add pci=noacpi or both, for example.) Other options might be needed.
What kernel version are you trying to install? There might have been a bug in it that's been fixed by now with a newer release. _________________ "No question is so difficult to answer as that to which the answer is obvious" -- George Bernard Shaw |

It now says it cannot find my "/dev/sda2" device wich is the root device I said that root partition resides off of... So if it is not the /dev/sda2, what is it? Or better yet why does it differ from the LiveCD install?

My guess is it would be something like:
/dev/Volumegroup/Logical_volume since you mentioned using LVM2
It can also be:
/dev/mapper/VG-LV.
So with volumegroup Gentoo, logical-volumename:rootdisk it would be:
/dev/Gentoo/rootdisk or /dev/mapper/Gentoo-rootdisk.

The root partition is not part of the LVM2 scheme. So it seems that it cannot find the block device that I thought was specified in the
/etc/fstab
