I've had this happen several times. I'm working on configuring syslog-ng. If I have something in the conf file the program doesn't like, it belches and the program doesn't start, which is normal. Problem is a .pid is formed even though the program isn't running. Then if I try to start syslog-ng I get the message, "syslog-ng has already been started." If I try to stop the program though the init.d script I'm told, "failed to kill 6820: No such process." If I delete the .pid file in /var/run it makes no difference. The only way I can get out of this loop is to reboot the computer.

One thing is obvious the syslog-ng init.d script needs to be fixed so no .pid is formed, if the program doesn't start. I will look into that later but my question is why does the system continue to believe there is an instance of syslog-ng running when there isn't and how can I clear this out of the system without having to reboot?
Thanks,
kent

Thanks that did the trick. I didn't realize gentoo rc scripts were so different. Time to do some reading:)
