hi!

I installed gentoo about 1 month ago and exept for some minor problems it runs fine :) i did a stage2 installation, so i did not bootstrap at that day. since i would like to optimize my system, is there a possibility or risk in bootstrapping now? can i just re-emerge binutils, gcc, gettext, and glibc or will this break my system? :?:

I haven't had any additional problems with systems where I've done that. However, if you're already experiencing problems, there's the possibility that they'll interfere with the update process.

Not to be anti-geek, but:
assuming you spend N hours running bootstrap.sh && emerge system, is the system going to speed up enough for you to earn that time back before you do something *else* to the core of your system?

I have the impression that stages 1 & 2 are already optimized at "-O3" and with "-mcpu" flags. The difference between that and "-O9" and "-march" is vanishingly small. You'd get better returns on your time picking a bug and trying to squash it.
