|
|
Okay, so I installed xfree during install and then later unmerged (or so I thought) and emerged x.org. Due to some mouse wheel troubles, I've discovered that I actually now have both installed. I kept twiddling with my xorg.conf to get the mouse wheel to work and on a hunch put the twiddles in the XF86Config, which made the wheel work.
So, does that mean for sure that I'm using xfree, despite both being installed? How can I tell (in a more direct manner) which is being used when gdm starts?
In a semi-related question, gdm won't frickin' start KDE unless I specifically tell it to. If the session is on "last" it starts gnome, despite having used KDE last. Any idea why this would be so? Does gdm not like me? I've un- and remerged gdm, hoping it would set things straight on reinstallation, but no luck. Serves me right for trying the Windows way of system maintenance. So, what config files should I maybe check, for gdm?
Any ideas, please? |

try doing an:
Code: |
emerge -s xfree && emerge -s xorg-x11
|
I did basically what you did, though not with a new install - I had Xfree, unmerged it and put on xorg. I remember there being a blocker in place so that if Xfree was installed portage would block xorg, and vice-versa.
In any case an emerge -s would show in my case:
Code: |
* x11-base/xfree

Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]

If I look in /etc/X11
Code: |
*[root@penguin1:/home/dave]ls -l /etc/X11/
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4636 Jul 20 18:17 xorg.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4636 Jul 20 18:17 XF86Config
|
It would seem that I still have XF86Config left over from the Xfree install. I also seem to remeber that portage will not remove this config file, and also that xorg will use XF86Config if it cant find xorg.conf.
At least I think that is the case... Anyone else have more info?
As for GDM, I beleive that many people are haveing problems with getting it to recognise KDE. Try KDM, it will recognise your Gnome sessions as well as your KDE ones as well as any other DE you may want to try - Enlightenment, *box etc etc.
Hope this helped. |

I still have both xfree and xorg installed. I don't remember how that happened, but it says so right here:
Code: | # emerge -s xorg xfree

[ Results for search key : xorg ]
* x11-base/xorg-x11

So, which, I wonder, am I actually using?
With the gdm thing, I was kind of hoping to keep gdm, because of the slick GUI and the cow in the background, but I may just switch to kdm. |

Here's a suggestion to figure out which one is running. With XWindows running, type the following in a terminal:
Code: |
> su
Password: [your root password]
> ps x
|
Here is a snippet of what I get on my system:
Code: |
4022 ? S 0:00 /usr/bin/gdm
545 ? RL 4:33 /etc/X11/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -n
19730 pty/s0 S 0:00 su
|
This middle line tells me exactly what path was used to launch the X server (of course it may look different on your system). Now we will use that exact path to figure out which X server is active. For my system, I type in:
Code: | /etc/X11/X -version |
And I get:
Code: |

which tells me that XFree86 is the server that I am actually running. I hope this helps. _________________ For tips and examples, check out my software development and scientific programming blog |
