i've already done the
ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Central /etc/localtime

Ive tried
ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/GMT /etc/localtime

Ive edited the /etc/rc.conf to read Local or UTC, neither change anything.

Ive recompiled the kernel after I set the symbolic link..

Ive deleted the localtime link and recreated it.

I'm pulling my hair out trying to get it to read right.

No matter what I do, uname -a always, ALWAYS reads
"Linux darkstar 2.6.7-gentoo-r11 #1 SMP Thu Jul 29 17:40:01 Local time zone must be set--see zic i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux"

Time doesn't change or anything. When I type "date" I get "Thu Jul 29 23:13:58 CDT 2004"

I came from Slackware 9.1 and it was running nice but people keep saying how good Gentoo is so I gave it a shot.

Thanks.

Is it a problem with /etc/adjtime perhaps? IIRC if you set the hardware clock with /sbin/hwclock --systohc, it will write this file...

You know its funny you mentioned this because I was just about to post on this subject. It took me a while to figure it out considering there are a lot of enteries in ../zoneinfo that would work for "Central time" such as Mexico City,Monterrey,Chicago, etc, etc.None of those would worked
so I finally tried "CST6CDT" and everything is fine.Talk about strange.Been using linux for years now and never came across anything like it.

Since you are using central time perhaps you should try this:

Code:
ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/CST6CDT /etc/localtime

Instead of using "Central"

What I was going to post is why does that shiny new symlink (/etc/localtime) become a file after rebooting?
Is this something new with glibc or is it exclusive to Gentoo?Just curious because I've never seen this before.

No change. Must be something to do with the 2.6.7-r11 kernel. "gentoo-dev-sources"

hmm...

I'm having the same problem with 2.6.7-ck-sources.

Linux DUAL-ATHLON3 2.6.7-ck5 #1 SMP Wed Jul 21 02:09:55 Local time zone must be set--see zic i686 AMD Athlon(tm) MP 2400+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

I recompiled with the 2.6.7-r13 sources and now I get

Linux darkstar 2.6.7-gentoo-r13 #1 Wed Aug 11 02:37:59 UTC 2004 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

That date is the time of compile... so I dont know what the hell to do. Date works fine, its just uname -a that screws up.

I had this same problem.

I solved the problem by doing a "make clean" before rebuilding and installing my gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7 kernel.

This forces a full rebuild of the kernel, which seems to pick up the new /etc/localtime setting.

I did a fresh make of 2.6.7-r13 and it still caused the problem. Oh well.

That was right, just recompile the kernel and everything works again, the uname -a show the correct time.

now:

Code:
uname -a
Linux verena 2.6.8-gentoo-r10 #3 Sat Dec 18 11:14:49 CET 2004 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Regards
