hi. this is my first post on gentoo forums. i hope itl be a good experience, like in all other communitues ive joined
anyway, i have downloaded the packages iso for 2004.2 x86, and i am now downloading the universal 2004.2 x86 cd. i read as much documentation as i could, but i still want more info on the install. so heres my plan of what i think i should do after i boot gentoo install. (please correct me and make suggestions in replies.)
1-gentoo cd will boot, and i will get a command prompt
2-select stage3 install (i want to do a stage3 install)
3-gentoo will install, partition, ect. (i have already prepared my partitions)
4-will gentoo ask if there are any extra packages (from the packagecd) to install when it finishes installing?
5-install extra stuff from cd (how do i do it from a terminal if gentoo doesnt autoinstall them?)
6-will i still be able do dualboot windows?
thanks for your time _________________ Windows 2003 Server Is Better Than Linux! - Ballmer -

This is ALL explained the Gentoo Handbook:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml
It is very detailed and easy to follow. Print a copy before you start if you don't have another computer handy.
If you run into specific problems while following the handbook, post the details on the forums. For now it looks like you have done all you can before jumping right in and getting your feet wet.
Good luck!! _________________ If tugboats were bigger, they'd be the ones getting tugged. |

Gentoo doesn't really auto-install anything... likewise there isn't an installer. So you will be doing everything manually, and it won't be asking you anything like "Do you want to install anything else...". As the previous poster said, the handbook is very helpful and detailed.
Have fun! It's good when you get to the end of the install... honest! _________________ No-one's more important than the earthworm. |
