I've followed the alsa guide, and I've also read several guides on setting up sound by I must be doing something wrong. I can play sounds great through aplay, but as soon as I try to play it with anything else, such as mpg123 or xmms I get "Can't open /dev/dsp!". Can anyone help point me in the right direction to where I messed up?

Are you using KDE by any chance? arts is probably blocking the soundcard, preventing other apps from accessing it directly. |

yeah, I'm using KDE w/ xorg on the 2.6.7 kernel, but I even get the /dev/dsp error when KDE boots up. |

Did you check your permissions?
[rafiki@dawntreader rafiki]$ ls -al /dev/dsp
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 9 Jul 31 19:28 /dev/dsp -> sound/dsp
[rafiki@dawntreader rafiki]$ ls -al /dev/sound/dsp
crw------- 1 rafiki audio 14, 3 Dec 31 1969 /dev/sound/dsp
[rafiki@dawntreader rafiki]$
Oh, and did you remember to put yourself in the audio group? |
