My static ip recently changed with an upgrade in dsl service and I messed things all up I think.
I had been serving my own dns record with my registrar as secondary, but when I changed ips, the registrar site won't let me change from their servers to mine with no error message other than there was an error.
I have a example.com domain with static ip (I have 8 of them actually - but that another question for later), and the registrar site wouldn't let me list ns1.example.com as nameserver until I set up that as a subdomain on their site with an A record using their nameservers. So, I did that and waited. But now it won't let me put ns1.example.com as my nameserver for example.com tho it has "glue". I really just want them all to point to ns1.example.com and use my bind setup.
I had this all set up just like that before the ip change, it even let me list ns1.example.com as the nameserver for ns1.example.com, and I can not understand why it's not now. I understand that one doesn't really want to use ns1 as ns1's nameserver but it is compliant from what I've read and will work. It was working before. I can tell my registrar (1and1) has changed their site some.
So, is it me or them? I was thinking of switching to GoDaddy if anyone thinks that would help.
Anyone have any info or advice for me? I'd appreciate it.
thanks,

I get the gist of what you are trying to do (it's basically the same as my setup)
You can only use an fqdn as a nameserver once it is registered as such. There should be an option on the site to register the name as a nameserver, during this step you provide the IP address of the nameserver. Then you can set that name as one of the nameservers for your domain. |
