I have to re install gentoo and downloaded "install-x86-minimal-2004.2.iso".Since I don't have linux installed right now I had to burn it in windows using alcohol 120%(This is the only cd burning software I have for windows and am not going to download pirated crap). The cd wouldn't boot so I downloaded "install-x86-universal-2004.2.iso" and burned it with the same results.I know that acohol can burn bootable cds because I've burned plenty of them in the past. Are the images messed up or what?

Yes my bios is set up to boot from a cd.I know this because I tried it with other bootable disks without any problems.

Sounds like your burning software is not working properly - you could download a trail version of Nero; that should let you at least create a proper ISO. I've not really worked with alcohol 120% so I'm not sure.

I just tried burning the universal CD with Nero, after the minimal version does not boot, only to find out that after downloading from two different sources, md5s match etc, that the universal CD does not boot either.

I even used Nero.....

Anyone else having the same problems?

I know of the problems people are having with the minimal cd, I posted to the relevent thread a ew days ago, saying that cd wouldnt boot either.

I have the same problem. I've tried burning with Toast (I'm burning on a mac) and D-U, but the same result each time, no matter what type of media I use. Other disks boot fine. I have virtualpc and have tested the image on that, it works fine. The only thing I can think of is possibly the motherboard. What are your system specs?

I havn't tried the universal yet

well I guess we'll just have to wait until they fix this.

If no one has submitted a bug report then I'll be happy to.

2004.2-minimal ISO is just bootable about 50% of the time / cd-roms. I can boot it on my laptop but not on my desktop. Anyway, there is already a thread about minimal not booting:

Sorry I didn't mean to start a new thread on the same subject but just didn't see that one.

Why doesn't the gentoo team make a small floppy boot image for the cds?If mandrake can do it then gentoo sure can.

Well, I think it's just a bug in the minimal iso. But they should perhaps ship a bootable floppy too (don't they on the CD with rawrite tools?)

I have managed to boot from both of the 2004.2 CDs.

I used Smart BootManager which is explained in the AltBoot pages on the Gentoo website.

Its simple and works like a charm :)
