[edit]this was a simple fix as I was making a careless mistake...i never tried to fdisk /dev/sda which worked correctly[/edit]
Hi,
I'm trying to install Gentoo Linux 2004.2 on my XP system through the use of VMWare. I chose smp kernel to allow dual cpu support. VMware boots the gentoo cd just fine.
Well I can't seem to run fdisk to set up my partitions because i'm freaking unable to "open /dev/hda"
any suggestions?
oh btw, after searchign the forums i tried
gives me: FATAL: Module ide_disk not found
and
gives me FATAL: Module ide not found
oh and just in case it matters, I allocated the full space for the linux virtual machine on one of my ntfs drives.
any and all help is so appreciated you have no idea. |

i have exactly the same problem.
i started to install with 2004.2 x86 live cd. everything worked fine until i had to chroot. chroot failed becaue my 32 bit live cd wanted to transfer to a 64 bit system.
then i downloaded the amd 64 live cd and started it. fdisk /dev/sda gave me an error. i tried modprobe ide-disk which returnes module ide_disk not found.
i put the x86 live cd back in and my previous file system was intact. i deleted all the partitions and restarted.
back to the amd64 live cd i run into the exact same problem agian. fdisk says: unable to open /dev/sda and modprobe ide-disk returns: fatal: module ide_disk not found.
i really dont know what to do anymore |
