|
|
Hey, Im new to linux, and every time I restart (by the restart button on my computer) when the computer comes back on, and linux starts up, it has to check /dev/hda3 because of impropper unmount. Now I know this is a really stupid question, but how *DO* I properly shut down? I know on the gentoo livecd, that is a "restart" command, but on my system, "restart" iisnt there and neather in "shutdown". Man I feel stupid. |

There are the commands "reboot" "halt" "poweroff", "shutdown -h" and "shutdown -r" (and "init 0").
All of those have to be run as root because they are in /sbin and /sbin is not in the path for normal users. Also, normal users hould not be able to halt the machine (it's a unix thing).
If you want to reboot as normal user you should look into the "sudo" command.
There is also the possibility to use ACPI to halt the system when the power button (not reset) is pressed. Read "man acpid" on how to do that.
