i'd be so interested in joining the cause but alas my g3 imac flickered and died on me recently. just flicker flicker boom on power...so so sad....

The name sounds silly to me, Darwin IS an operating system.

If you're just doing something like making portage work on an OS other than Linux, do as stonent has and call it "Portage on {whatever}".

i suspect its more than that tho
they probably at least want to port the gentoo init system
and possibly various parts of the base layout?
