I have an HP Pavilion zv5030us. It uses an ATI IXP sound device, and whenever i try to change the volume via alsamixer, it freezes my computer, to the point where i need to use the power button to restart. I have checked messeges log, but nothing usefull about my sound card show up. I am using a 2.6.7-mm6 kernel.
This is my second time installing gentoo on this laptop, and I remember having the exact same problem, and i was able to fix it with a simple modification to the atiixp.c file in the kernel sources. Here is my dilema. I found the VERY SIMPLE edit on the web, but for the life of me, I cant find it again (no bookmark due to system crash, and google just isnt helping.) I was hoping that someone may have run across this problem. I've been on google for over 5 hours now, and still no sign of the simple fix. I remember it was something like switching 2 of the return statements in the source, a max of about a 10 character switch, but for the life of me i cant find it. PLEASE HELP!

boot the system with pci=noacpi to see if that helps. As a side note, I tried that kernel on my main machine which has an sblive using alsa and had the same problem - changing the volume would screw it up..
If the pci=noacpi boot param doesn't work, change your kernel |
