ck42,

That doesn't apply to you.
Did you do an xorg update ?

It would be interesting to try the nv and vesa drivers and see what the log file says about modules to try to narrow the problem down to xorg or the nvidia driver.

Which version of the nvidia-kerenl do you have?

Yes, I did update xorg. Now running 6.7.99.2 (tried .99.902 but it couldn't initialize the core keyboard no matter what I tried)

Using the "nv" driver as I am right now, in my Xorg.0 log there is:

Code:
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation NV20 [GeForce3 Ti 200] rev 163, Mem @ 0xea000000/24, 0xec000000/26, 0xeb800000/19, BIOS @ 0xeb7f0000/16

I have the 6111 nvidia-kernel installed (the Gentoo emerged one, if that's what you meant).[/code]

ck42,

I was more thinking of a section like
Quote:
(==) ModulePath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
Using vt 7
(--) using VT number 7

(II) Open APM successful
(II) Module ABI versions:
XFree86 ANSI C Emulation: 0.2
XFree86 Video Driver: 0.6
XFree86 XInput driver : 0.4
XFree86 Server Extension : 0.2
XFree86 Font Renderer : 0.4
(II) Loader running on linux
(II) LoadModule: "bitmap"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a
(II) Module bitmap: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
compiled for 4.3.0.1, module version = 1.0.0
Module class: XFree86 Font Renderer
ABI class: XFree86 Font Renderer, version 0.4
(II) Loading font Bitmap
(II) LoadModule: "pcidata"

etc ...

which was missing from your failed log. Is it in your good log. (near the top)

ck42,

Yes. No mention of modules there either, so it can't be that important.

Have you tried uncommenting 'Load "dri"' and commenting 'Load "GLcore"'?

ck42,

We know you config works because it runs the nVidia driber on my system under XFree.

ck42,

Your config is OK too. I've migrated to Xorg here and my box starts X using your config file.

That leaves the kernel, the nvidia module or xorg itself.
Which kernel are you using (exactly) and can you post the config file for it and the output of emerge --info

================= edit =================

I'm convinced it down to the lack of modules appearing in your log. I get this running your config.
Code:
(==) ModulePath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
(II) Open APM successful
(II) Module ABI versions:
        X.Org ANSI C Emulation: 0.2
        X.Org Video Driver: 0.7
        X.Org XInput driver : 0.4
        X.Org Server Extension : 0.2
        X.Org Font Renderer : 0.4
(II) Loader running on linux

However, I don't yet know why.

PostPosted: Tue Sep 07, 2004 3:25 am    Post subject: hardened gcc-3.41 xorg Reply with quote

ok, on another thread in the forum, people who had put 'hardened' into their make.conf USE flags and had used gcc-3.4.1 were unable to run Xorg. A fix was discovered to compile xorg as static.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=193512&highlight=xorg+static

however, what static as a useflag means is that libraries that would normally are modules to X are now compiled directly into X.

This static flag disables X modules, meaning you cant load that newly emerged nvidia-kernel driver.

This was my case. I had to re-emerge gcc, re-emerge xorg, and re-emerge nvidia-kernel without that hardened flag.

might your problem be similar?

coren: No 'hardened' flag in my $USE. Glad you got your problem solved though.

I've since updated kernels and am currently using 2.6.9-rc1-love1.
Also, just to rule out one more thing, I've replaced the video card with a Ti4200 (was a Ti450). Same EXACT behavior.

ck42,

That all looks sane. Theres one or two oddities but nothing that should break nVidia.

What do you use RieserFS for?
I'm tempted to tar my kernel tree and post it on the web for you to try. Its not quite the same as yours but the major thing missing is RieserFS. Its a 2.6.8-gentoo-r1.

I could also try your config here but that will need to wait until the weekend since I need to build your kernel from scratch.
Can you tar your kernel tree and post it in some webspace?
It will be >100Mb so you may want to bz2 it too.

I'm still convinced its xorg related, since you don't get any modules messages in the X log file.

All partitions are RF except swap and /boot (ext3).

Haven't done this before so I'm not exactly sure which part is the kernel tree. I'm guessing maybe the /usr/src/linux/* is what you want?
As for webspace, I don't have anything that large to post it on. Any free sites I can temp dump it?

Not sure if that's good or bad. Good if the 6.8.0 xorg fixes I guess :?

ck42,

OK, I've got your kernel and it boots here. I had to build the nVidia driver for myself, since its built outside of the kernel and is therfore not in the tree you uploaded.

When I modprobed nvidia by hand, I got an undefined symbol error. So I have to ask, does lsmod show nvidia loaded?
If so, please scp me your /lib/modules//2.6.9-rc1-love1/video/nvidia.ko file so I can plug it in here.

If nvidia is missing from lsmod, do
Code:
modprobe nvidia
Does that generate an error?
What does
Code:
dmesg
say about the error, if there was one?

I run 2.6.9 rc1 because i need the intel fixes for the acpi on my mobo.

there is a ebuild fix for the nvidia driver which exchanges pci get class to work with this new kernel, it is somewhere around in this forum, just search for 2.6.9 you will find it.
(Copy in overlay directory)

My problem at the end with crashing x that i had a .xinitrc which does xmodmap (used to run perfectly but after emerging xorg again it crashed my X server just right after it initalized the mouse. I would recommend to use the kernel agp driver for the nvidia, this runs Warcraft perfectly on my machine since several days ;-)

Probably have a look at such a simple thing ? (Remove .xinitrc or any keboard mappers if you have used one before, just to exclude this as problem ...)

ok like mentioned a few posts ago, if you use the 'static use flag then the NVIDIA driver wont work, but without compiling xorg with static it gives me all sorts of errors 'unresolved symbols' and stuff of that nature

for the sake of time, im going to leave it as it is..
but very soon im gonna redo my entire gentoo system and will try to figure out how to get rid of that +static use flag
IF ONLY i had a faster computer :-P

Thanks for the help

Well, ck42, I had the exact same problem as you. Hopefully it will have the same solution.

I had the nvidia drivers working perfectly, and had just finished an emerge -u world, and decided to install xorg with the +static use flag. After that, no matter what, the nvidia driver wouldn't load. And, it created all the same problems that you were having. It doesn't matter what the nvidia driver is, xorg couldn't load it. So, I removed the static use flag, and checked it with

Code:
emerge -pv xorg-x11

to make sure it was -static, then recompiled, and it worked.

I wonder if there is a way to compile the nvidia driver statically into a xorg compile?

Interesting. I'll try re-emerging xorg -static when I get my system straightened out (In middle of moving to new drive with reiser4 setup)

...as mentioned tho, not much help if -static causes xorg build to fail. But I'll certainly try!!

thnx for the suggestion!

Will try again with less agressive FLAGS

[EDIT]

Tried CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe"

Fails at same point.

Anyone else seeing this?

[EDIT-2]

Looks like groff was causing the build error. A patch is already out and it's being installed. Will make another attempt.
Ok....updated groff fixed that. Just need to try and restart X when I get a chance.

yeah, it shouldn't be the flags. mine are the same as yours, but -O3 instead of -O2, only difference.

lets see if it is groff . . .

Ok....maybe time to put this one to bed.

Somewhere along the line of moving drives/partition formats (r4), and doing other stuff, the problem fixed itself.

If I had to guess, it would be that it had something to do with moving to udev.

....now to get my hdd and sound card working again

I just got it!

I've checked dmesg after the attempt to modprobe nvidia. It complains on incompatibility between the required version of the driver, with "gcc 3.3" at the end, and actual version of the driver, with "gcc 3.4" at the end.
So, I thought - it must be the kernel. I did:
Code:

cd /usr/src/linux
make clean
make
make modules_install

Then I installed the kernel, and now I have it up-n-running! NVidia works :)[/code]
