|
|
Hello,
recently I did a fresh installation of Gentoo v1.4 (after I screwed my v1.2 system with the update-scripts ) and everything works fine.
One problem has been left that 's taking to much time for me now. It's that damn soundcard (VIA8233A) which I can't get to work unter KDE.
I followed everything in the desktop guide and the alsa sound matrix. THen I discovered a kernel lockup during boot which I got fixed with a workaround from this forum.
I can send a wav file to /dev/dsp and it makes some noise. But when I try to play a mp3 oder wav file under KDE I do hear nothing.
I checked KMix and raised up everything. When I start aRTs Control I see the sound levels but I can't hear anything.
I 'm going insane with this. If anyone knows a solution please post it here.
Best Regards,
Tealc |

i have this onboard sound chip also, and recently setup a 1.4 box. i've had audio working, but it's not persistant between boots. i still have a little work to go.
as far as your issues, can you check to see if artsd isn't using a null sound device (thus why you would see the audio levels and no sound). there's an option some where to turn notification on/off, i'm not sure where. you can also create a test user (be sure to give audio privs), and login as that under kde.
you can also try a non-artsd desktop, maybe enlightenment. see if you can get audio from there. |

I have the same motherboard. Motherboard is rock solid and runs great, but save yourself some pain and go to newegg.com and buy a $16 soundblaster card.

Did you solve ths problem? I can only get sound using XMMS (I did a alsa-xmms emerge) but not in KDE generally. When I boot up KDE complains about "Permission denied" when using /dev/dsp, what permissions should I set? |

New information:
Solved the problem with user not having permissions to /dev/dsp, but worst is left.
When the sound in kde is working xmms hangs on me, won't play. When I log on with a user not a member of the audio group then the sound in kde ofcourse won't work, but xmms works like a charm.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
/Jonas
edit: Mplayer and the built-in movie player can't initialize sound either |

After all those problems I gave up... went out and bought myself a SB Live instead... works perfectly now! |
