|

I would like to run a webserver on my Gentoo machine. Which webserver should I pick?
I want something mainly to serve files (including HTML files), but I'd like to run a wiki and/or CMS in the future. I'd like something easy to install (doesn't everybody?) and it must be open source. I want something that won't take up too much space, especially if it's for features I don't use. I'd say easy configurability is a desire, but I can handle Apache, and Apache is probably as hard as it gets.
Webservers I know of:
Apache -- I'd prefer something lighter
TUX -- not quite that light
Xitami, Roxen -- who?
jo! -- a Java webserver
boa -- it's in portage, that's good
and others...
Did I miss anything important? Which webserver would you recommend? I've heard Roxen is easy to use. jo!, being Java should be fairly easy to use, Apache would definitely handle everything I ever wanted to do (OGG streaming would rock). Apache 2 or Apache the previous one? Why do people still use the previous one? Also, is there anything special I should know about running a webserver on Gentoo? What's with this slots thing?
Lastly, is there somewhere that collects information on the different open source webservers available? It seems like there should be a web page somewhere... |

I would recommend Apache, it is widely used and has all kinds of modules (mod_php, mod_perl, etc.) _________________ Play ET? Come by #gentoo.et on freenode!

Apache2. It's the most versatile, so you won't have to change servers when you want to do something more.
It's not too hard to set up. _________________ ^]:wq |
