athcool version 0.3.7 - enabling/disabling Athlon Powersaving mode

!!!WARNING!!!
Depending on your motherboard and/or hardware components,
enabling Athlon powersaving mode may cause:
 * noisy or distorted sound playback
 * a slowdown in harddisk performance
 * system locks or instability

Please use athcool AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Isn't the kernel supposed to handle this? There is an option to execute HLT instructions on idle that should be adequate.

A decent cpu fan!

I have an athlonXP 2000+ overclocking at 2.2 GHz (cf 16.7 GHz)

When local air temp got upto 35 C I had to fit a case fan to get a bit more air through the box. That's all. I can get it to 59 C cpu with cpuburn or similar so that looks safe to me.

Get yourself a good solid copper heatsink.

As for you Athcool, sorry no help. Dont see the sence in buying a fast cpu then slowing it down. Just cool it well and enjoy the power.

Zalman Heatsinks are usually reserved for processors that can stand passive cooling (even though they have fans, they do very little) In which case, no, that's not a good one to get for you.

Motherboard: ABIT KT7E
Chipset: VIA KT133E /VIA 686B chipset
CPU: Duron 750

Result: Reduced CPU temp about 10 C! (43.5 C -> 32.8 C)

lspci shows:
Code:
0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133] (rev 03)
0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133 AGP]

lm-sensors shows:
Code:
via686a-isa-6000
Adapter: ISA adapter
SYS Temp:  +34.7 C  (high =   +45 C, hyst =   +40 C)
CPU Temp:  +32.8 C  (high =   +60 C, hyst =   +55 C)

Yes, the CPU temp is lower than case temp! BIOS health monitoring agrees.

I remember reading that you have to have ACPI enabled, and APM disabled, for athcool to work.

Here's my kernel config:

Code:

Power management options (ACPI, APM)  --->
[*] Power Management support

[*] ACPI Support
[*]   Sleep States (EXPERIMENTAL)
<*>   AC Adapter
< >   Battery
<*>   Button
<*>   Fan
<*>   Processor
<*>     Thermal Zone
< >   ASUS/Medion Laptop Extras
< >   Toshiba Laptop Extras
[ ]   Debug Statements
[ ]   Power Management Timer Support

< > APM (Advanced Power Management) BIOS support

Oh, and of course, athcool only works when your CPU is idle.. so if your CPU is working hard (SETI@Home, gaming, etc) then you will get NO effect.

Newer kernels allow the cpu temperature viewing through acpi it seems...
Type:
Quote:
cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature

to find out

Hi

here http://www.daniel.nofftz.net/linux/ is some info relating this topic. I'm using the setpci statements listed there, and get more than 10°C lesser CPU temp than without, and without any performance loss. So this does make sense, as one does not need full performance in every second, the CPU is often only waiting and does nothing at all. Then it can happily go to sleep (HALT) and save some energy and heat

Here http://www.heise.de/ct/01/18/036/default.shtml is also a german article dealing with this topic
