I have search the forums the best i could...
i am gettin a very strange error on my fully updated gentoo box. Over the corse of a few days, i have gotten several thousand of these messages in my /var/log/messages file.
kernel 2.6.6, syslog, samba 3.0.5.
"Aug 1 00:18:30 gentoo1 smbd[21509]: hostname (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx) couldn't find service dist"
If anyone can shine any light on this, i would greatly appreciate it. This also seems to have pretty much brought my network connectivity to a crawl as well.
If i need to post any config files and or versions to assist, please let me know. |

whats in your /etc/hosts file? this looks like a loop back problem. Make sure you have '127.0.0.1 localhost computername' in there or else your computer cant find itself. _________________ Symlinks to:

the 'hostname (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)' is info that has been removed. the hostnames are from baiscally all of the winders boxes that are on the same subnet and the xxx's are the actual IP's that correspond to the hostnames. |

OK. I have solved this one myself.
when samba compalins that it could not "find service %variable%" that means that the machine mentioned in the error is looking for a share of the name %variable% on that samba box and not finding it. I do not quite know WHY these machines are looking at my box for this share...but at least i got the error to shut up for the time being.
If there is anyone out there who can explain this, please feel free. |
