I am installing 2.6.7-gentoo-r11 on a brand new Fujitsu N5010 with a P4 3.2Ghz 800Mhz FSB Hyperthreaded processor and 1GB RAM.

The installation went great, but a problem has come up during an emerge of kde on the laptop.

About 10 minutes into the emerge, I get a warning on the screen that says:

CPU1: Temperature above threshold
CPU0: Temperature above threshold
CPU0: Running in modulated clock mode
CPU1: Running in modulated clock mode

As soon as this error occurs, the laptop hard locks and requires the removal of the AC adaptor as well as the battery to reboot.

I double checked the config of my kernel, all acpi stuff is enabled that was recommended and acpi is configured and active in the BIOS as well.

While I realize that I could clock down the cpu, I am on AC power, I should be able to use the full speed of the processor, or at least not see a lock up problem when the cpu is throttled automatically.

Has anyone seen this issue or have a work around for the problem...?

Many Thanks

Richard J. Sears

is apm enabled in the BIOS? also make sure that your fan is running. mine problem with my Compaq Evo N610c was that the fan wouldn't run at all and would cause mu laptop to lockup or just simply power off from heating up.

I checked the APM in the BIOS and checked the fan. Everything looks normal.

I checked the log in the BIOS as well and it does not show that the CPU ever when into thermal overload.

Thinking the problem may have been hardware related, I went down and picked up a second Fujitsu N5010 to try Gentoo out on.

Well - the exact same problem occures when I attempt to complie anything - the laptop locks up after telling me that the CPU is running in modulated mode.

One interesting thins is that even though the kernel is reporting that the CPU is in power modulated mode, when I cat the current CPU speed, it is still at 100% (3.2Ghz).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Unable to locate any other information on the net concerning Gentoo on the new Fujitsu N5010 with thermal issues, I have resorted to lowering the power of the CPU to 2.8Ghz or 3.0Ghz as opposed to 3.2Ghz while compiling anything.

This has resolved the issue of the lockup, however if anyone has any insight as to why the problem exists in the first place, that would be great. I would love to be able to run the unit wide open in all aspects of operation.

A call to Fujitsu support told me that if the laptop detects a overheating issue, it will throw a BIOS log message.

To date, the Laptop has not logged any hardware level log messages about any issues with the cpu, heat or otherwise.
