Ive done configuring X but when trying to use different resolutions by changing the modes in the conf file, i dont see any difference. Im pretty sure that the driver has been loaded (iv added vesa drivers in the kernel) and the config file says so too (i think) :

Code:

Identifier        "Card0"
Driver            "savage"
VendorName   "S3 Inc."
BoardName     "86C270-294 Savage/IX-MV"
BusID             "PCI:1:0:0"

Ive added the lines mentioned in this guide : http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

What do you mean by

? Does the resolution stay the same even if you change it? Please post your config file.

heres a small snippet of the part i edited out according to the x server configuratione howto :

Code:
Section "Screen"
  Identifier  "Screen0"
  Device    "savage"
  Monitor   "Monitor0"
  DefaultDepth  24

--Skipping some text to improve readability--

  SubSection "Display"
    Depth   24
    Modes   "1024x768"
  EndSubSection
EndSection

I adjusted it exactly as given in the guide but each time it starts up, i dont see a difference. currently its compiling kde so i hope the changes will *work* in that. But once again, which drivers should integrate into the kernel? will the vesa (or something to that effect - i saw it in a post while searching the forums) be ok? coz it seems to have detected it right in the config file

Well, maybe your video card doesn't support 24 bits? Try lowering to 16 bits and see if it helps.

I have a savage/MX in my laptop and running Xorg - everything works out of the box. I did xorgconfig as root - and just had to setup mouse wheel manually. Please post your full xorg.conf and xorg.log (or howit is called?).

i managed to solve it the problem and get it working perfectly with the help of this topic : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=182519

All i did was add the HorizSync and VertRefresh values. i read in the guide that setting wrong values could even fry the monitor but apparantly, lcds arent sync-sensitive and as long as its within the range, it will work.

Thanks for ur help blaster![/code]
