I don't know what applet your talking about, what does it do? Anyway, applets are usually from the gnome-applets package.

You're thinking of the capplets that come from the gnome system tools, I'm sure.

There's an ebuild from BMG for it if there's not one in the base portage tree.

Yes sir...the Gnome System Tools is what I was looking for...

...odd that it isn't emerged as a default with the GNOME install??

It's not part of gnome 2.6 and below offically. It should be part of gnome 2.8 though.
