|
|
So what is Gentoo's desktop environement
Mandrake's is KDE
RedHat was GNOME (did it change to KDE??)
from what I have gathered Gentoo's desktop of choice is KDE
However I have just seen this
http://www.gentoo-portage.com/stats.php
and as you can see in the USE flag's section
1. alsa
2. X
3. dvd
4. gtk2
5. mmx
6. gtk
7. samba
8. -kde
9. usb
10. cdr
11. sse
12. gnome
13. tiff
14. qt
15. cups
16. -gnome
17. java
18. kde
19. truetype
20. opengl
so as you can see GNOME seems to be (or the lack of KDE) sems to be the desktop of use by the Gentoo masses?
What do you think?
--EDIT--
Sorry this should have been in CHAT, Mods could you move please |

There is no "official" Gentoo DE... it's all about choice. |

Imho, SuSe, Mandrake, RH, et al. have 'official' desktops because that makes their lives (per se) as commercial distros easier to manage. Seeing as how Gentoo is not a commercial distro, it does not need an official desktop.
Or to be somewhat sarcastic, Gentoo's official desktop is the console, and just like you can configure other commercial distros to use something other than the de-facto/default desktop, you can configure Gentoo to use something else: X. _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

Yeah, there is no default desktop. It doesn't come default with any form of X11, and therefor there is no default WM/DE. |

Also, not all desktops have USE flags to go along with them. XFCE4 is a good example (it's what I use mostly). Also, the full Mozilla suite nearly qualifies as a desktop environment, since it contains a browser, mail app, and news reader. Really all you'd need to add is a media player, IM app, a pager/panel, and xterm and you have a fully functional desktop environment. |

default = absolutely nothing
USE Flags aren't terribly representative.. I'm using +kde +gnome while running mostly kde. _________________ what up |
