What's the name of the wm you have, when you start x and haven't installed any other wm's yet.
It starts with 3 xterms and each window has a ugly green border. |

That would be twm, the default WM that ships with X. I personally can't stand the thing, makes me think of my dad's Sun box from the 80s. |

Tnx, It's really ugly, but I'm still emerging kde, so I don't have any other wm's. |

I always first merge some lightweigt wm before merging anything else, that way you can still work in a decent environment while the rest gets compiled. _________________ Fvwm|Fvwm forum |

na slows everything down. I just leave things like
#emerge xorg-11 gnome
to just before going to bed and it is done in the morning |

It doesn't take me that long te compile xorg
Quote: | Thu Jul 29 17:44:20 2004 >>> x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2
merge time: 1 hour, 18 minutes and 38 seconds. |
And that way I can already start working without having to wait for firefox and other stuff to compile...
If you use a lightweight wm (WindowMaker comes to mind as it has very minimal dependencies) it doesn't slow your merging down very much, unless you're installing on a _very_ slow system... _________________ Fvwm|Fvwm forum |

Nah, links worked fine in a terminal without framebuffer |

Me too. The only difference is that lighweight wm (i.e. fluxbox) is where I stop |

Blackbox is a great lightweight WM with no dependencies besides X11 (AFAIK). Of course, it's been dead for a while, so you can install something like Fluxbox or Kahakai if you don't mind compiling some other things (IMLib2 comes to mind). _________________ old outdated sig |

Well, me too, in a way, I first emerge windowmaker and afterwards I emerge fvwm2, which takes longer because I use about every use flag on it that it supports... _________________ Fvwm|Fvwm forum |
