kmix not arranging volume linearly

I am having issues to control the volume on my laptop.

My soundcard is an Intel 82801CA-ICH3 using ALSA on a 2.6.7 kernel gentoo kernel.

When I increase the volume in kmix it increases the volume in dB rather than linearly (ala windoze). Hence I get a lot of distortion when using high volumes because its difficult to control.

Is it possible to change the mode of mixing in kmix ?

Also: I never experience such distortion before when I had Windows installed on the machine
