Is it safe to remove the source archives after installing packages, in order to save disk space?
They will be automatically downloaded if they are needed again, right?

Yes, it is safe to delete them. If you can, consider keeping some, as downloading them all the time adds to the already heavy bandwidth usage. Check Cleaning out stale distfiles for a way to clean out older files, while keeping current ones. Also, you can burn the files to a rewriteable CD if you have one available.

This thread mentions some other files that are safe to delete.
