Well I have sound working XMMS and mplayer.
Well the games I have for now that use sound are Quake 3 and Frozen Bubble. Apparently Quake 3 uses /dev/dsp . I dont know how things work but I know in mplayer i have it set to use OSS with /dev/dsp1 otherwise I dont get anything into my headphones. ALSA doesnt work with mplayer, it works in XMMS but I have to specify it not to use the default PCM (apprently its Dummy Mixer or something like that) and use my soundcard...
What would I need to do? _________________ sig_ |

Actually make that no sound in any programs... because I expect programs like Gaim and GNOME itself to have some sounds built in... _________________ sig_ |

well, first of all, try to give enough details for somebody to solve your problems. If you have a pretty common sound card, searching the forums solves the problem in most cases. If you have done that, post at least what soundcard you are using.
have you tried unmuting the master/pcm channels with als-mixer? |

Well here are the devices:
Code: | selj@simon selj $ amixer info -c 0
Card default 'Dummy'/'Dummy 1'
Mixer name : 'Dummy Mixer'
Components : ''
Controls : 10
Simple ctrls : 5 |
Code: | root@simon selj # amixer info -c 1
Card hw:1 'AudioPCI'/'Ensoniq AudioPCI ENS1371 at 0xd400, irq 9'
Mixer name : 'SigmaTel STAC9721/23'
Components : 'AC97a'
Controls : 36
Simple ctrls : 23 |
Everything is unmuted... I'm listening to my mp3 collection right now with XMMS but in other most programs I get nothing. _________________ sig_ |

Are you using KDE or Gnome?
A sound daemon may be blocking the default sound output... |

Sounds similar to a problem I had. I /was running KDE, and was suggested by someone to look for an option in the control center to have arts release control of the sound device after n second of idling. I set it to about 5 second, for no exact reasone, and I have since been able to have sound with kde applications and xmms. Also note that I had this problem because I was trying the OSS only kernel driver, and I didn't have this issue using the alsa kernel drivers in the 2.6.x kernel.
Cheers. |
