5.1 Surround Speakers, DVD, Gaming, ...

i just wanted to know, what current status of surround sound is. i mean, what can i get, if i buy myself a new audigy 2 and a 5.1 system in terms of:

1. watching DVDs
2. playing games

does anyone know how EAX is working (in windows) and if there's is anything similar in linux. is EAX surround sound for games and if so, what are SDL and OpenAL using for example?

i understand, that there is a hardware accelerated version of openal, but i don't know much about it.

i've currently an old sblive! and a creative quad sound system. no surround at all. does anyone know if it's worth, buying an audigy 2 and a 5.1 system? do i get real surround in games or in movies?

What audio system is you using?
I think that Alsa should be able to do it, but i haven't realy tested this out by myself.

could someone tell me if it's worth to spend another $180 on a new soundcard + speakers just to go from 4.1 to 5.1 surround? is the technology in linux advanced enought to handle 5.1+ in most situations (gaming, dvd)?
