Hey everyone. I'm new to the forums but yeah, I set up an xVNC server on my Linux box and I'm able to connect to it locally but not through the internet (my ISP is SBC Yahoo! DSL). When I run Ifconfig, I have a 172.x.x.x address but when I go to www.whatsmyip.com I have a 64.x.x.x address. I am able to ping the outside world but the outside world can't ping me. I have no immediate firewalls or routers hooked up and I think this might have to do with my ISP. Any ideas?
Thanx in advance,

Are you running a device that performs NAT for you? If not, it looks SBC/Yahoo! is and they are blocking traffic to your machine from the Internet.

flame,

Chances are your DSL modem is also a router/firewall and is NATing your private IP (172.16.x.x) to your public IP (64.x.x.x). If I were you, I would try to find the website for the manufacturer of your DSL modem (check the front/bottom for maker and model numbers). Find documentation that allows you to access the config web site (your DSL modem is probably running a mini web server on it for configuration purposes).

If I had to guess, you might be able to access your DSL router through http://172.16.x.1 (where "x" matches the third octet of your machine's private IP).

Once inside the configuration screens, you should be able to either put your machine on the DMZ (allow all traffic through to it) or use port forwarding (forward all VNC port traffic to your internal machine... you will need to find out which IP port VNC uses).

Good luck. Let us know how you do.

Thank you both for your quick replies. My modem is NATing my address. :x
My boyfriend is going to come over sometime soon and help me with what you suggested, AggieEmpeg. I'll let you know as soon as possible. Thanks again!

I agree, sounds like you just need to add the port forward. Worked for me. (Ive got an older crisco 67X series dsl modem)

It worked! I went to the webpage for my DSL box (through my IP) and checked the box for the firewall to let everything in...so now I can use VNC. Then I had my boyfriend try to get into my computer and it worked! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! Now I can work on my computer tonight at the LAN party at an Internet Cafe, hehe. Thanks again! -FlameOfDark8

May be just me but it may be a better idea just to forward the port(s) that you need in, rather than all of em.

I completely agree with gnuageux. If you are forwarding all ports to your machine, you have essentially removed the firewall for that one machine... you have put it on the DMZ. I would only forward the ports that you need to run VNC.

On my setup its port 5900 / tightvnc. I think thats the default port, I'm sure you can change it though.
