|
|
Well i've been running the wiki now for a few months and it seems that we are beginning to get many users from other countiries, and I think now might be a good idea to add multilingual support. Such as adding http://de.gentoo-wiki.com or http://fr.gentoo-wiki.com or similar. much the same way wikipedia.org does this.
I feel this will be an easy addition with only one hurdle, getting admins for the other languages.
I would like to open up this thread for thoughts about doing this and if anyone would like to "apply" for a postion as an admin on one of these wikis if i were to add them.
For thoe wondering a wiki admins job is pretty damn easy, you edit the main page when you feel it need changing and you monitor changes made by others. Usually this can be done in about 5 min a day, but i would appriciate it if you did a little more then the minimum .
So thoughts, questions, anything? _________________ Gentoo-Portage.com - Where the portage meets the web

A good idea IMHO. I have posted a news item on our Hungarian portal looking for admins. _________________ shine on,

I will post back here in a day or 2 with which languages we will be starting with and who will be admins (chosen from this thread), but I do need multiple admins for each wiki so if your interested speak up or emailme: mikevalstar@gentoo-wiki.com
you even get a neat @gentoo-wiki.com email _________________ Gentoo-Portage.com - Where the portage meets the web

ok cool, email me and I can have it all setup in a few hours. What you will need to do is translate or create new pages to replace the major pages on the wiki. Should take a couple hours. Beyond that its up to you. I'm sure others will help translate the actual articles.
Email me mikevalstar@gentoo-wiki.com and we can go through creating the dutch wiki. or you can join the mailing list: http://gentoo-wiki.com/Gentoo-Portage_Wiki:Mailing_List _________________ Gentoo-Portage.com - Where the portage meets the web

Hi everyone,
I think its generally a good idea to put some locale sites, but I also fear that some really good tutorials and howtos are scattered through those sites. What about the purpose of a wiki? Wasn't it to keep all really important infos in one place rather than scatter them around (although in different languages)?

Personally I don't like the whole se.gentoo-wiki.com idea. I think there should be the standard wiki, but then translations bound to the howto, instead of the howto to the translation.
Reading that, it didn't make much sense.
Instead of:
Howtoos
-English
--Howto Bip
--Howto Bap
-Spanish
--Howto Bip
-Swedish
--Howto Bap
--Howto Bag
It would be better to set it up:
Howtoos
-Howtoo Bip
--English (Default)
--Spanish
--Swedish (This howtoo has not been translated. Press Edit to translate now.)
-Howtoo Bap
--English (Default)
--Spanish (This howtoo has not been translated. Press Edit to translate now.)
--Swedish
-Howtoo Bag
--English (Default) (This howtoo has not been translated. Press Edit to translate now.)
--Spanish
--Swedish

I think translating all those wonderful and helpful articles would be a blessing for the international Gentoo community. But as feffi already stated, they should imho reside on a centralized place. How about a "choose your language" option on the main wiki site once the internationalization has reached a reasonable level?
Apart from that, I am a German student of computer sciences who uses solely Gentoo and has taken an intensive course of the English language. I would very much like to contribute by translating some of said excellent articles to German. So if there is enough resonance and this project of internationalization is indeed being undertaken, I'd be honored to contribute. Just email me at gundelgauk@gmx.net and please mention the article that has to be translated. I will do the best I can to stay as near to the original version as possible while making it easy to understand and follow for German Gentoo enthusiasts. =) |

How about a Traditional Chinese section too? I could be the admin if you lack people that can read / translate English to Chinese (or vice-versa). In fact, there are some trival mistakes in the Traditional Chinese handbook too. _________________ "There will be more joy in heaven over the tear-bathed face of a repentant sinner than over the white robes of a hundred just men." Well some translations have been started, the folowing are already up and running:
In Progress:
Abandoned: (ones that started but never went anywhere)
If anyone would like to take over an abandoned wiki feel free, join the mailing list and ask to be made an admin. Also all of the wikis could use more admins, email the mailing list to be concidered.
Just thought i would keep you all upto date _________________ Gentoo-Portage.com - Where the portage meets the web

Hi there!
Well, I went through this topic. I consider it to be a really good idea to have a multilingual support. I'm a student of Computer Science and English and I'd be interested in traslation to Slovak language. However, before that I have to get accustomed to the whole wiki interface and learn how the it works. I think this is all for now. I'm just interested if it is possible to start a Slovak translation. Well, for now.. If I get this approved, I'll have other questions then.
Regards. _________________ Security access compromised! |

Ok, I've been playing with wiki for some time and I'm getting into it. I might have a look at slovak translation of wikipedia and see how to get things translated. I noticed that could not edit the main page. But it has probably been disabled or whatever. _________________ Security access compromised! |

ho hoho,
Just discovered this post. Ok then.
I've seen the Spanish part exists but is not supported (flaviooooooo where art thou?). I can help on it, but I can't start it from the beginning, I already did it for the French section, which already takes me quite a lot of time (this is a subliminal call to French/canadian/belgium/... people that want to help, they *are* welcome, we/I need help, and I can't do everything _alone in the dark_ )
I'm looking for a French people too, to make the fr section a bit more beautiful, to edit, correct howtos... to write, simply.
Translation is still on progress, but I need help on this too
once again, thanks Thrasher |

I don't think an Finnish Gentoo-Wiki would be a too bad idea. No-one can really do it themselves but if a few Finnish-speaking people would like to participate it would sure be a nice idea. |

Can we have the http://zh.gentoo-wiki.com for Chinese Gentoo Users?
I found pages in the wiki is really useful for me diving into Gentoo. So i believe the Chinese users will benefit from if there are also the translated version.
