Is your fglrx module loaded and used in lsmod ? 8O

Yup. Believe me, X behaves *very* differently when I'm using fglrx versus radeon.
Code:
[imptech@imptech-beta] /home/imptech(100): lsmod | grep fglrx
fglrx                 212516  7

I realised now that my RC4 is now working with fglrx... but only when i disable the section "dri"..

#Section "dri"
# Access to OpenGL ICD is allowed for all users:
# Mode 0666
#EndSection

When i enable this i get the error:
No matching visual for __GLcontextMode with visual class = -1 (-1), nplanes = 0

But disabled i have no direct rendering -> again slow

thanks. unfortunately, i already had the same, except for the tv options which I changed. That didn't solve the problem.

I tried with both 3.11 and 3.9.0 r1 drivers, without any result. Sad. :(

Few questions about all this thing.

1. Why when i close all open applications that xcompmgr -c thing stops itself too ?

2. Is it possible to load xcompmgr -c along with KDE ?

3. How can i control transparency without writing everytime "transset .x" in console ? What i want is to open an app and to change it's transparency level..

Thank you 8)

2. You should be able to add it to your startup. In gnome, you add it to your session, I'm sure kde has something similar. If not, add it to your ~/.xinitrc.

3. Make a launcher button for your panel that executes the command "transset n" where "n"=the transparency level you like.

I don't know if any of you picked up on my issue earlier. Anyway I had the problem that xcompmgr worked perfectly sometimes and other times it made the screen very distorted. And I couldn't figure out what made it work.

Now I finally managed to figure it out. If I started up X clean it would never work. But if I start glxgears for a while, afterwards xcompmgr would work perfectly. When I enable transparency for a window it becomes a little slow, but shadows and everything works like a charm. My question now is, does anyone know why glxgears has to be run before it works? I suppose it has something to do with DRI but what?

nadir-san,

What is the option "RENDER"? I know about RenderAccel, but I'm not familiar with RENDER.

Is anyone else getting some serious bugs with fluxbox? With the extension enabled, windows aren't raising at all. With the -f flag added to xcompmgr, whenever I minimize a window, only the shadow back up, and the window itself for only a split second. It's nuts.

yea, it enable hardware acceleration for the extension afaik.
Makes it all go a whole lot faster.

in the logs it shows up

Code:

(**) Extension "Composite" is enabled
(**) Extension "RENDER" is enabled

Code:

(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "RenderAccel" "true"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "CursorShadow" "true"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "CursorShadowAlpha" "60"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "CursorShadowXOffset" "4"

(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "MetaModes" "1280x1024;1024x768;800x600;640x480"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling experimental RENDER acceleration
(**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling cursor shadow

Code:

(II) Initializing built-in extension MIT-SHM
(II) Initializing built-in extension XInputExtension
(II) Initializing built-in extension XTEST
(II) Initializing built-in extension XKEYBOARD

the RenderAccel option didnt seem to do much, apart from let me use some opengl, I guess there is some conflict with hardware access that causes xorg to crash. RenderAccel seems to allow mplayer -vo gl2 and glxgears, glxinfo etc. Im not sure why this is, perhaps it provides hardware routines for 'some' opengl functions like glTexCoord2f and such, but maybe it doesnt handle other stuff like floating point numbers or something ;) , like I say I dont have a clue, im just surmising its something like that.

yea, i have the xcompmgr -f problem with gnome as well as fluxbox, havnt tried kde, but im presuming its the same. I am also having the fluxbox raising and lowering problem, but just with xorg, nothing to do with xcompmgr.
Its not so bad though, it just means sometimes you have to manually raise windows. Ill install fluxbox cvs tongight after this emerge world is finished, and see if its fixed ;)

I'd guess that you have something trying to use OpenGL loading. I had this problem for a while because of xscreensaver. I recompiled it with USE=-opengl and that got rid of the problem. Alternatively you could just unmerge it.

We need to get the new xcompmgr in portage. Some of the new effects added since the 27th, specifically the minimize fade, are awesome.

*random expressions of frustration*

No matter what I do, the nvidia driver makes Xorg freeze in a cascade of artifacts (aamaof, the whole screen becomes an artifact in itself :)). This happens with Xorg 6.7 as well. Anyone experiencing the same problems?

The only kind of error message I get is in the Xorg.0.log file (after a reboot), where it says it caught a signal 11 (Segmentation Fault, IIRC). Nothing more. dmesg is quiet as a tomb.

Interesting thing is I can start the X applications from the terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F2) and see what they themselves say, and all they say is that they got disconnected from the server. So it's most probably nothing to do with the apps themselves, but only the X server.

Another interesting thing is that if I start pekwm I can run most applications, until I start one that uses GLX (such as glxgears or xcompmgr). After that, everything makes X freeze.

My system:
* Xorg 6.7.99.904 / newest xcompmgr-transset in Portage
* NVIDIA kernel/glx 1.0.6111 (no other versions work)
* GCC 3.4.1 (system-wide consistency on this one)
* GLIBC 2.3.4.20040808 with NPTL
* GeForce 5900 XT

Anyone?

I just emerged .904 (903 was working fine for me) but now when I do startx, X acts like its going to start but doesn't. I can see the mouse cursor flash up *very* briefly, but then X closes and exits with no errors.

Argh!

I've read thru this forum and can't find anyone else with this problem. I am gonna go back to .903, but I really want .904 to work. I am on nvidia if that helps.

EDIT1: Interestingly, after re-emerging .903 it does the same thing...I am thinking a config file somewhere is messed up. Any clues would be very helpful.

EDIT2: Silly me. The problem was a typo in .xinitrc  All is working fine now.

Same here. Except glibc without nptl. No problems. Okay, X crashes now and then. :-)

Strange, because XFree86 had no problems with NPTL...

I'm thinking the NVIDIA GLX drivers need recompiling on NVIDIA's part (since they are the ones with the source code, and the current GLX driver were compiled for XFree86 4.0.2...). They probably aren't NPTL-aware, and there might be binary-level API changes between XFree and Xorg?

I've noticed a few problems with Xorg 6.7.99.904 and am wondering if anyone can help.

GTK1.x apps crash X because it can't find the Helvetica font, and compiling certain apps wont compile either because ld can't find -lXp.

ideas?
