btw. some of the files for 6.7.99.904 are available now at http://dev.gentoo.org/~seemant/distfiles.

Seriously.

For now though, RPanther theme and xcompmgr are causing major eyegasms at the moment.

if you're going to brag about the theme, atleast post a link to the screenie.

I don't see how it's hurting you in any way, what themes other people use on their desktops. I own an iBook so I know that one of the best features of OS X is the UI, and although it's great in its own right, it's nice to be able to bring its styling to something that's a lot more customizable. In regards to usability and polish Apple is way ahead of anyone else and to me that's as good a reason as any to emulate it. Since the aqua and milk themes are so popular that they are cloned (usually poorly) for pretty much every single gui toolkit and WM known to exist you get the advantage of consistancy as well, and that's something that's still sorely missing from the linux desktop.

But hey, if you're only out to impress people then you can be as origonal[sic] as you want to be.

What the hell is going on here ???

X fails to load and says:
Code:

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
    at http://wiki.X.Org
 for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

The log file:
Code:

(II) LoadModule: "Keyboard"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module Keyboard
(II) UnloadModule: "Keyboard"
(EE) Failed to load module "Keyboard" (module does not exist, 0)

But this is the same xorg.conf i used on 6.7!!!!!!!

Why??? Why??? Why???

IIRC you have to change the driver from keyboard to kbd.[/quote]

I'm having very strange issues with xcompmgr. Yes, I know it's still beta but the thing is, it works perfectly sometimes. And I can't for the life of me figure out why.

If I start up X fresh and try xcompmgr, it doesn't work at all. If I move a window the screen does not refresh properly so the window leaves a trace all over the screen. But then if I shut it down and try it again in a few hours time, it works like a charm. I've tried everything, all possible combination of switches, to figure out what the problem is but I can't find it.

Has anyone smarter than me been able to figure this out?

I've just emerged the latest .ebuild. I can't see any difference, loads a little faster though. How can I enable the drop shadows/transparency in Gnome? I'm using the latest nvidia drivers if that helps.

I'm getting this dialog from gnome when I startx:

Code:

Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.

X server version data:
Gentoo Linux (The X.Org Foundation 6.7.99.904, revision r0-0.1)
60799904

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb

Here is relevant part of my xorg.conf:
Code:

Section "InputDevice"

    Identifier  "Keyboard1"
    Driver      "kbd"
    Option "AutoRepeat" "500 30"
    Option "XkbModel"   "pc104"
    Option "XkbLayout"  "us"

EndSection

xprop -root | grep XKB returns nothing

gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb
Code:

 layouts = [us]
 model = pc104
 overrideSettings = false
 options = []
 update_handlers = []

Any ideas?

Does anyone know howto get rid of these black lines left on your desktop when minimizing windows? I'm running Gnome 2.6.3 here. The shadows look great and RenderAccel really helps with performance!

I also haven't figured out howto get Gnome to make windows transparent when dragging windows. Though I do have transset, and can make windows transparent manually.

And how do I get xcompmgr to startup automatically?

Thanks! :idea:

Any other pertinent information? Do you have RenderAccel enabled for example? On my system renderaccel causes a few artifacts, but they're erased by dragging a window over the artifact. Sort of odd. It may also be related to twinview for me.

Anyways, your glitch is handy for png compression. :twisted:

renderaccel enabled. but i do not have twinview or similar things enabled.

So far is there anyway to get 904 off of portage? I'd rather have portage do it than me messing around with any files all thrown into a folder after I've untarred it.

Well, this is what happens for me with renderaccel enabled. Dragging a window through the artifacts gets rid of the problem.

Anyway, renderaccel is still betaish. Without it though, composite is extremely slow.

Just add it to your Session Autostart (under Complex Settings -> Sessions).

The "transparent while dragging" is in Metacity 2.8.1. Their implimentation is really, really slow, though, so wait until .2.

Using yesterday's cvs-build, works like a charm. with shadows and 75% transparency to all windows by default, using t00rman's xcompmgr.c file posted in this forum. Having continual eyegasm. Goes really well with KDE+baghira (turned off the theme translucency, because now I have REAL (TM) transparency :D ) And incredibly stable. It has crashed a few times, but, none during so called normal usage. Crashed once when I quickly typed f f f into mplayer, crashed when I moved mouse when xcompmgr was starting up (in that one sec). Otherwise incredibly stable. With glxgears running just fine along with xcompmgr -c (dropped fps from 6400 to 6200, but, that is OK I guess)

And all these without cpu usage of X going beyond 2.5% :D

Thanks to all who made it possible. :D

Ok let me break it down for you.
startup firefox, go to some website, and move the window around *quickly*. You can see the effect better if you move parts of the window out of the screen, because the window needs to be drawn fast it tears, but that doesn't happen when the double buffering is on.
The effect is even more noticeble when you do that with a window of openoffice.

We can discuss this over and over again, but that doesn't change jack. Without double buffering the window tears, period. And unfortunately you have to start the xcompmgr to get double buffering.

You're right about the offscreen parts breaking down when quickly moving the whole window back into view. Indeed DBE only works with xcompmgr enabled with any parameter.

I discovered a problem with xmms and visualworks-nc. They don't start up when enabling the composite extension. xcompmgr or not doesn't make any difference. xmms just reports this:
Code:
Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
   serial 237 error_code 8 request_code 2 minor_code 0

and visualworks just dies without any notice at startup.

Disabling composite makes both work perfectly. This is weird since both programs worked fine in Keith P.'s freedesktop server a few months ago.
