According to the release plan found here it should've been released already, but I can't seem to find it just yet... :)

6.8 has been in cvs since Friday, Sept. 3.

i don't think it is, the latest release is 6.7.99.904 (which is running well for me now)

saw in #xorg that the next target date is Wednesday, the 8th.....though, this was not guaranteed, just the next hopeful date.

Xorg, in its most recent incarnations, has known problems with Gtk 1.x apps. Just look at the Xorg mailing list for the gory details.

So if you absolutely need Gtk 1.x apps, revert to stable Xorg (6.7.0) and wait for the next stable release.

Or just disable composite extension, that worked for me :?

Anyone have this working with fglrx? It always bombs out big-time on me, complaining about missing symbols in fglrx_drv.o.

I saw the rage3d thread, but adding:
Code:

Load "xaa"
Load "fb"
Load "fglrxdrm"

Did nothing for me :( As such, I'm running the exact same config with fglrxdrm commented out and the radeon driver, which works fine (except for the whole no-3D thing).

With all this talk I decided to write up a guide for all this:
http://www.grebowiec.net/archives/2004/09/xorg_68rc4_a_si.html

It should walk you through all that you need.

Heh, decent guide, although I really don't like how you suggest doing ACCEPT_KEYWORDS and emerging an ebuild directly where there are MUCH more elegant ways of doing things.. e.g.:

Code:

# echo "x11-base/xorg-x11" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
# emerge =xorg-x11-6.7.99.904

(man portage to read on how portage.keywords works)

That way as new release candidates are relased (or even when the stable 6.8.0 is released), the user will be able to install that without wondering why it won't show up in their emerge -uaDv world.

When you install something via the ebuild directly, it has the same effect of doing emerge --oneshot, which, IMO, isn't very fun. And ACCEPT_KEYWORDS makes it quite hard to be able to do have a mixed x86 and ~x86 installation base and update your system reliably (especially if you want to use --deep).

PostPosted: Tue Sep 07, 2004 10:46 pm    Post subject: Remembering transparency settings? Reply with quote

** EDIT: Ok, apparently I missed page 16 which posts the modified xcompmgr which remembers the settings and provides a default transparency level. You can ignore most of my post. **

Following the information in this thread, I have compositing working. It's beautiful.

Is there any way for transset to remember the transparent settings for a window? I have my Gaim window set to .3, which works great. Then I was disconnected, and when I reconnected, it's no longer transparent, and I have to manually set it again. Gaim is never actually closed.

I'm assuming that this isn't currently possible (I'm also assuming that this would be a function of the window manager), but I would like to hear otherwise.

Thanks!

joe

First let me say that this is a very nicely written guide!
Not that you have to follow my suggestion but it would be nice if you put this guide up at www.gentoo-wiki.com That way it will be easier for people to find, and it will also allow people to make improvements to it.

I'm having problems running apps that link to libXp.so.6 like

acroread
matlab

Apparently libXp.so.6 does not exist on my system since I installed xorg-x11-6.7.99.904. I think the same applications did work with 903.

Does anyone know of a workaround?

i think you must remerge xorg-904 using xprint flag before

USE="xprint" emerge -p xorg-x11

Right. Xorg 6.8.0 is out.

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63222

Please don't create any bugreports about the Xorg-6.8.0 release. -- We are aware of that.

Please keep our rsync etiquette in mind: GF15: Rsync etiquette OR How often should I sync?

An ebuild will be released soon. Please give our devs a few hours to test their ebuilds.

Thanks.

Actually it looks like it's not out just yet... the site linked to by Slashdot has been changed to a message that tells us to wait for an announcement later today.

I hope that doesn't stop the devs from working on an ebuild though ;-)

Maybe this is a stupid question, but once the ebuild is released, do I just have to do an "emerge xorg" to install this new version? Will I have to get new versions of my nvidia drivers or change anything in Xorg.conf or anything? I'd love to try out the new transparency and shadows and whatnot, but I don't want to break my machine...
