Quote:
This morning the X.Org BOD approved the X11R6.8 name for the upcoming
release.

The CVS tree has been tagged with the XORG-6_7_99_1 snapshot tag. These
snapshot tags (XORG-6_7_99_n where n is the snapshot number) are
intended for people testing the release and for people packaging the
release. We expect that there will be several snapshot tags as bugs are
fixed before the code freeze (scheduled for Friday).

At this time, we ask everyone begin fully testing the release. The
sooner that we can get people testing, the sooner that we can find and
fix the remaining bugs and get the release out.

Detailed test instructions have been added to the release status wiki
page:

http://wiki.freedesktop.org/XOrg/XorgReleaseStatus

After testing, please send your test reports here to the xorg at fdo list,
and I will update the release status matrix.

Thanks!

Are there any plans to get this into portage?

MOD EDIT: Made sticky.
-- Deathwing00

mod edit2: unstuck and locked, XOrg 6.7.99.x / 6.8.0 (part 2) was made sticky instead.

It sounds like they won't be releasing source packages until the actual release, so it probably won't make it into portage. However, you might be able to convince some of the more experimental ebuild writers here (redeeman, etc.) to make an xorg-cvs ebuild.

This is indeed exciting.

It appears that fluidportage has xorg-cvs ebuilds already:

Gentoo's X maintaner said that the alpha(which was never released) and beta will go to portage although they will be masked in the package.mask. Unfortunately he is now on holiday and won't return until the 16th.

Here's the post he made to gentoo-desktop.

The Changelog says that this release will sport XDamage and XComposite, the extensions that made up the legendary fd.o xserver (transparent windows, shadows, remember?). They will probably be disabled by default (due to being in alpha state), but it seems we are finally making the move for the composite desktop! Great news indeed. :)

I just hope it will work with my nVidia drivers. I don't think I can choose between XComposite and OpenGL acceleration.

I just did a cvs checkout of 6_7_99_1 and it compiled without trouble, apparently.

I don't know if I'm brave enough to actually install it.

Edit: For those that are, make sure to run quickpkg to make a binary package of your current Xorg setup for easy reinstall.

So will we see any changes right away? or do we have to wait untill the desktop managers implement the new features?

Someone on OSNews.com mentioned that "the CVS version of Metacity already looks for the composite extension when configuring". Gnome 2.8 (Metacity) will probably support the new features out of box.

Besides, you won't need specific integration, since composition is on a different level than the window manager. This means that it can render transparent windows without letting the WM know. Of course, if you want integration (i.e. right-click a window and select opacity), you need specific support.

This was demonstrated with xserver and xcompmgr of fd.o fame.

fd.o [as in Freedesktop.org] is alive and well (it is the organization behind Xorg), and XServer (the one derived from kdrive that was so popular for a couple of weeks) is AFAIK still being used as a playground for new features for X.org, which is the main branch that was forked off of XFree86.

Yeah, it's getting pretty complex... :)

I took the plunge and did a 'make install' on my cvs checkout. Strangely enough, that took way longer than the 'make World'.

I got it to run twm. And at first I didn't notice much of a difference. I didn't notice any documentation on how to turn on the composite extention or XFixes and XDamage, so I don't know if that capability is in there.

It did seem to dislike KDE, though. KDM basically hung without displaying anything, and launching Konqueror from an xterm was hit-or-miss. I got it to load up once (slowly), but on subsequent tries it just hung until I hit C-c to close it.

On the upside, the nvidia drivers appeared to work without incident.

I look forward to seeing the final product some time after the 25th.

At least some time ago composite wasn't build by default and had to enabled separately in host.def. Also to run it you need to either add
Code:
Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

to your xorg.conf or run the xserver with '+extension Composite' command line option.

I don't know about XFixes or XDamage but I would guess that they need do the same with them too.

Also, composite currently seems to break Mozilla Flash plugin, which causes Mozilla to crash.

This is what X needed: do not try to re-invent the wheel, but improve it.

I'm now just curious (when we have the composite and damage extensions supported in the closed source drivers) X's 'look and feel' will get better. That's much more important than having translucent windows dropping shadows on each other.

Dragging a window over an other one gives a kind of echo. Looks very bad and can be done with every x11 app on every computer running XFree / Xorg.

Well running gnome 2.7.* on XServer (quite an old build now, from april or summin I think?) I get propper true real transparancy. As in I can read my mail throughthe nautilus window I am dragging over it. It really looks very very cool, if somewhat useless.

So yeah if it's the same extensions it will work "out of the box".

I have installed the latest branch of Xorg and enabled composite in my xorg.conf.

Everything seems to work fine, even with the nvidia drivers and TwinView.

However, I cannot find a composition manager for the xorg server, so I cannot enable the new effects. Is there a xcompmgr for this version of Xorg?

I've built Xorg (with composite) from cvs and xcompmgr from cvs. I got shadows to work, but my text gets screwy. This bug I reported has a screenshot: https://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1053

Indeed, I have the same problem as floam with the proprietary ati-drivers and the built in radeon drivers, so I don't think the drivers have anything to do with it. Actually, it works best with xcompmgr -c. If I try any other effects (xcompmgr -s or the composition manager in metacity), the windows become just white blocks and all of my text goes away. I spent some time in #xorg and #freedesktop on freenode last night, and the apparently I'm not the only one experiencing Composite problems. It is still very buugy. I just hope they can fix it up by the 25th.

More important than the transparency effects is the fact that everything will *look* a lot faster thanks to buffered rendering. Strange how something that's actually a bit slower than xfree can look as if it was a lot faster.

They should have rather called this version 7.0 instead of 6.8.

This isn't big enough of a change to warrant changing the major version number. Just new extesnsions. Maybe when they rewrite xlib based on xcb it'll be considered a big enough architectual change.
