|
|
I use xorg to render my fonts. They look really ugly. All the posts about this on the forum did not help.
In fact, they look really ugly when AA is off. I think this is the real problem : Here is a pic
What I would like to have is something like that : Pic
Using antialiasing with hinting doesn't help much, either. Some fonts, especially Luxi sans, really look distorted.
Using antialiasing with autohinting makes things better, but then fonts like bold Verdana, etc. are really blurry which is a real problem when consulting web pages.
I change the antialiasing/hint/autohint settings with the /etc/fonts/local.conf file.
Any ideas or suggestions are welcome... |

LCD or CRT monitor?
did you emerge freetype, and did you load it in your xorg.conf configuration file.
Also if you emerged freetype did you emerge it with bindist and cjk on or off? |

LCD monitor, but this has no importance, as I dont like subpixel hinting.

Yes.

I reemerged freetype with bindist and cjk on, but I cannot see any difference. My x.org is not compiled with cjk but this should not make any difference, I think... |

The reason I asked about the LCD is that it does matter. I noticed on my laptop with an LCD screen I am having the exact same issue you are. However on my CRT desktops I have no problem with any of the fonts. |

Hum... that's pretty weird.
My screen is a 1280x800 widescreen LCD. This might be the reason why the fonts are 'scaled'...
Any ideas? |

Hinting is not working on snapshot1.png @ jp.lozi.free.fr. Are you sure it is activated? |

On the snapshot, autohinting is enabled. Enabling hinting instead is a little better, but not like the second shot.
Using antialias makes all the text bold and blurry. I just reinstalled my system and it was not like this before... |

Um, it seems I'm having exactly the same problem as yours, the only difference is that I'm using GNOME instead of KDE. It must be a problem between X.org, fontconfig and freetype. If this doesn't solve I'll have to go back to XFee85 . |

I don't think it has anything to do with Xorg. I had the exact same problem in XFree. |

Upping the DPI does help but without AA it doesn't matter what the DPI is it still looks bad. |

Changing the dpi just increases the fonts sizes.
Now I'm trying to emerge freetype with the bytecode interpreter : using bindist and cjk doesn't work, as well as editing ftoptions.h : I always get :
* Bytecode Interpreter is disabled. |

Where are you seeing the bytecode interpreter is disabled error? |

I see it while freetype is being emerged.
It doesn't appear anymore when I use -bindist -cjk.
I followed the instructions at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=129728&highlight=fuzzy+bold+fonts :
Quote: | Mmm... the first time I tried to emerge freetype I made it this way: as soon as the source was unpacked, I pressed CTRL-Z to pause the script, went to the working directory and uncommented the appropriate line in the configuration header. Then resumed the compilation with the fg command.
You need to uncomment:
/* #define TT_CONFIG_OPTION_BYTECODE_INTERPRETER */
(if I remember correctly...) in the file freetype-2.1.7/include/freetype/config/ftoption.h |
Now, I believe BCI is compiled. I use hinting without autohint but I still can see no difference. My bold fonts are still as fuzzy and blurry as they were before...
This is an important problem for me as I design websites, the verdana bold fonts look so different (and ugly) than on other OS...
Any ideas...? |
