Hi ! I know this question will be a completely stupid one, but I really to know what is happening to my gentoo box....

Here is the problem :
My computer was installed with a 2004.1 Live CD. When I installed gentoo, I read somewhere that the update were automatic, no need to upgrade (like mandrake). All was working fine, but I updated Kde and a lot of other thing this week, and now, all is unstable. Most : when I want to upgrade my sytem anew, portage says that my config is not supported anymore...
Recently, I've read that a lot of people are asking help with the 2004.2 install process. So I"m not sure if I am required to install 2004.2 live cd for the things to work again ?

Could you be more specific? Are there any error messages?

Is that the complete message?

2004.2 is only the version of data on the CD.

there are a couple of things.
You shouldn't have to install 2004.2. your problems are fixable. "emerge -u world" gets you to 2004.2 or better.
How did you update KDE?
Code:
emerge -u world

or

Code:
emerge -u kde

and assuming you used emerge -u, did you run etc-update? beware, be carefull running etc-update you can seriously screw up ur system if not carefull
what is unstable?
give us some more details.

To be more specific, there are numerous problems :
- my encrypted harddrives seems to take more ressources than before.
- all my softwae using GL have becomed slow (but AGP is ok).
- The borders of windows of kde dissapears suddenly without reasons I coul figure out. I use ctrl bs alt to exit.
- Sometimes the keyboard and mouse are freezing
- enemey territory is unplayable (it is a emulated 32 bits version, which was working before). I update my system dayly using emerge -UD world, and use etc-update but I'm carefull about what I choose to change or not. But I'm using the kernel v11 and I have seen that the 12 and 13 version were out. Is there a chance that the the new kde ebuids need the v13 to work correctly ?

Never use ´emerge -UD´ it´s evil!

There are numerous threads about how to safely upgrade with emerge, I suggest a quick search for some of them in order to gain more knowledge about the process.

ok, first things first. Try an emerge -u world (that is lowercase u). Then try upgrading to the latest kernel. This sounds like a opengl or X problem. What video card are you using? Check out opengl-update and try re-emerging your video drivers. I know nvidia has been releasing a lot of updates.

Try that and see if it works. Otherwise some details that will help:
*What X are you using, xfree or xorg?
*what kernel (the whole version number)?
*what video card hardware?

I have yet to see an evil computer. Emerge -U has its issues but this is certainly neither the topic nor the problem here, unless the original poster did a --depclean and didn't mention it.

Or WinME. That's even worse.

And thats not even an "Evil Genius" type evil. Its more of the "Bumbling Idiot" style, and I'm not sure if that really qualifies as evil.

Thanks for all the answers... I have finally solved the problem using a emerge -e (I think I have done a mistake before emerging other things with "~x86" flags....)
