Ok, I just bought linux for my x86. I have no clue where to start. I have both the install cd and the binary packages cd. First off, my computer is a piece of crap and I push it to its limits, but I have no choice, seeing as though its an extremely old computer, and only has like 10 gigs . I'm guessing I'm going to have to buy a new hard drive (or two), which is kind of hard without a job, but very possible. Lets see... I have no idea what partitions are, but I'm guessing that they are sort of like separators of space, from what I've read from some of the other posts. Anyways, I have the quick install guide printed out, and I've been looking over it, which caused me to realize I have no clue what I am doing. Anyways, any help is greatly appreciated. I'm going to be on aim, yahoo, and msn (trillian) for about an hour if anyone could possibly contact me on there. Yet again, any help is appreciated. Thanks for your time and sorry I couldn't make this more organized. |

partitions are like software seperation of your hard drive, so you can have the /boot, swap and root partitions of your 10gig hard drive.
everything is covered in the guide, if its too hard there are simpler distros like mandrake and fedora that have automated install good luck |

Doesn't mean he read it. I have a copy of the Koran, doesn't mean I now what it says.
edit: Ironically, the very first post in this forum has alot of useful information. |

When you are at the kernel configuration part, don't use genkernel. Configuring your own kernel is worth it. Genkernel'd kernels boot slow anyway. |
